Need help with your VP???

I finally took the Sorenson router out of my configuration. It’s not that it’s a bad router its just that it’s only minimally configurable and there are bugs in the user interface. I was not able to configure the firewall features and for me that was a problem.

So I put my Linksys firewall/router back on the network. Some things I learned in the process.

Assign a static IP address to the VP. Don't use DHCP unless you have a reservation set for the VP.

The placement of the VP with regard to the firewall can be set up in one of two ways (maybe more). You can either put the VP on the DMZ (de-milatarized zone) or you can configure your firewall to allow for inbound and outbound ports and services as follows;

Inbound ports
1720 TCP
15328-15333 TCP and UDP
Outbound ports
1024-65535 TCP and UDP
Services
FTP port 21
LDAP port 389
HTTP port 80

The DMZ option is the eaisest but the least secure. Technically someone could hack, corrupt or launch a DOS (denial of service) attack on your VP. Remember the DMZ is not protected by the firewall.

I am a bit new to VP technology but I understand this. The firewall configuration above should work for Sorenson VP’s and other vendors as well. That statement assumes that you can make point to point calls between Sorenson VP’s and other vendors VP’s. I think you can but I have never had the opportunity to try it. I guess I need more friends with VP's :cool2:

Anyway, with what I learned combined with my background I just thought I might be able to offer some assistance if anyone is having problems.

I dont need firewall router. It's disable due traffic for games. So I use personal firewall and intrusion prevention. I noticed some hacker finally break in firewall but intrustion prevention can detect and block quick.

Actually you can configure your firewall to allow for gaming provided that you know the ports that need to be allowed. The personal firewall is a good thing for added protection along with updated anti-virus software. I like some the personal firewalls because they notify you whenever something is trying to access the internet from your computer or when something from the internet is trying to access your computer. You can then decide to allow or block it... Pretty cool stuff

Yes you did and I appreciate that. I know my ASL really sux but I am hoping to be able to use the VP to learn more and keep my signing skills up. Let me know when you get your VP back up again and maybe I will know a couple more signs by then.

Too lazy to pick right ports. Too many games have diff ports. Yeah I love personal firewalls and some software that I dont want to connection to interent so ask me then i pick block as I want. ;)

Mookie, it's not about finding hotties for me. It's about learning and retaining my ASL.

Hey, at least you are honest about the port thing. It can be a pain because you have to know inbound and outbound ports and weither they are UDP, TCP or both. I manage several firewalls at work so for me it's kind of routine.

Yes.

There's two softwares I know of firewall based on Linux. D/l the .ISO then burn it into a cd. Insert in your computer and let it run step by step.

Good luck and have fun!
Ahh yes, these are appliances running on linux based operating system. I thought he was refering to IPTABLES or IPCHAINS which are the native firewalls in RH Linux.

What do you mean. A linux firewall???

Linux O/S. Sorry. Yeah. I like to use Linux O/S's firewall too.

I don't like to spend $$$ for Nortron Internet Security each year. Linux is much less worry about spyware, virus, and hacker. I know there is no 100% safe.

What about Redhat Linux? Is it same?

Get Mac OS X...It's based on UNIX engine. You don't have to worry about spyware, viruses and hackers either. That's if you get a Macintosh computer, it will run Windows XP, too. You can also run Linux on the Mac, too.

I'm just suggesting ya. :)

What Linksys model? but old router will work for VP but some new linksys not work it

I have BEFSR81, WRT54GS (wireless), and EFG80 (NAS),
also three computer, they are perfect work and work VP too
but WRT54GS won't work VP, I use BEFSR81 with VP work. Both are work for computer, NAS, etc.. work all Ports (FTP, etc..)

you can choose Port or DMZ for VP-100, if you use DMZ to VP, they won't hurt computer! becuase Hack, Virus can't into VP becuase VP is chip / ROM (read only), no problem, I use Port to VP and DMZ is zone
