Hi. I wanted to know what laptop do you recommend for basic instant messenging? I have Blackberry 7290 and needed to type fast to decrease time typing (thumb-typing is very ackward for me), plus, a battery will have to be long for me to use instant messenging in my laptop, which Core 2 Duo would be a good option than AMD Turion but I'm not an Intel fanboy since I wish AMD would've competed with Intel for energy/heat consumption...

I preferred Windows (I'll reinstall Windows down to a bare minimum for trouble-free performance increase from pre-installed applications...) because I wanted to be able to use ZoomText due to my visual impairement. 14.1" or 12" is okay but I'd rather go with 10" because I wanted the laptop to be small and thin, but a good-sized keyboard are suitable for me to type fast.

With the kind of laptop, I'd be using it only for instant messenging with a connection to BlackBerry 7290 and not for classroom or watching movies since I can carry my 15" widescreen laptop (heavy but carriable) to a car and to school. I'd be carrying a 10" laptop to vocation places like Walt Disney World and travel to other places.

512MB of DDR2 Memory, 40GB Hard Drive, Core 2 Duo with Centrino, and good graphics capability should suffice, but I'm not all that for processing speed, memory speed, and 3D graphics capabilities (but I'd laugh at Intel Graphics Media Accelerator...heh heh). However, AMD's HyperTransport Technology is a very good one for memory to communicate to CPU at a speed of CPU, but again, not in for CPU speed.

I hope anyone who will help your needs and know that Intel's new chipset got improved energy and heat effective. There are many hardwares to fit your needs. I also know you are dedicated to Window. I remember CPU magazine not long ago that there is new I can't remember the name of brand of compact Window computer. If you want DVD movies I think something will not work because the size of DVD will not work with small computer? It works fine with 10 inches or higher I think. Maybe I am wrong. I suggest 15 inches is better so you can see. And also Verzion or T-mobile seervices have wireless card that works with Window only PC laptop except Mac. That means you can travel anywhere you can surf wireless communication with your friends. I hope my comment helps you?

Well not for DVDs. I mean...nothing very processor-intensive as I wanted to use MSN Instant Messenger/AIM.

The reason I say 10" or less is I wanted something very small to carry and lightweight.

And one more thing, my laptop will be connected to BlackBerry 7290 as a modem, once I get my Dial-up Networking setup for modem.

Why use AIM everywhere you go? Wouldn't that lead to an addiction?

I know some people who are so addicted to AIM that they use their Sidekicks while in a conversation with others in person, by video phone, or by webcam. :(

from what I hear that Yahoo Msg is better than AIM because when it been discount and Y! always can reply whatever anyone isn't online.

So, I'll try to grow over Y! instead AIM with friends who will use.

It's relay.

I'm a typist when it comes to laptops/desktops.

It will take days to thumbtype with my Blackberry because there's no bumps in F and J keys. Plus, I've got big thumbs which I can mistakenly hit other keys but I don't keep my eyes on backspace key. But when it comes to desktop/laptop keyboards, I don't look at the keys. The keybaords in laptop/desktops give me the advantage that I can make less mistakes in desktops/laptops than in BlackBerry.

About AIM, I use "My IP Relay" with AIM for making/answering calls through relay.

No bumps on the F and J keys?

The joy of having a Sidekick II! The Sidekick II has bumps on the F and J keys! Hehehe!

Anyway, not every place has wireless.
