STAFF INTERPRETER
(12 Month Position)
Qualifications:
• RID/NAD certification/LCD Level V.
• AA or BA degree preferred
• SCPI: Superior
• Ed. Interpreting Cert. issued by LA Dept of Education
• Five years professional interpreting in various settings.

TITLE: Educational Interpreter – Level V

QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of an Associate of Arts degree; substitution for the Associate degree is high school graduation and two years of full-time paid interpreting experience or documented professional training/experience equivalent to a minimum of 1,080 workshop/clock hours per year.

At the time of appointment, must possess Advanced-Plus Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) rating and achieve Superior rating within first 3 years of employment. The minimum acceptable SCPI level for effective job performance is Superior.

Possession of Certificate of Interpretation (CI) and Certificate of Transliteration (CT) from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, or State Sign Language Interpreter Certificate Level V from the Louisiana Commission for the Deaf or equivalent.

Possession of an Ancillary Provisional Certificate, Ancillary Grandfather Certificate, and/or Qualified Ancillary Certificate issued by the Louisiana Department of Education. One year of full-time paid experience interpreting in a wide range of settings, especially educational situations, beyond any experience used to substitute for the Associate degree. Possession of good human relations skills.

Must become an LSD approved driver.

Some work is performed in physically comfortable positions with little or light physical effort, and some work requires moderate effort. Lifting thirty to forty pounds may be required and brief period of heavy muscular exertion may be required. Interpreting/Transliterating requires extended use of the upper body muscles and fine motor movements of the hands. Physical requirements are subject to reasonable accommodation in accordance with ADA standards.

REPORTS TO: Coordinator of SLIS
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Employee must be able to perform these assigned duties without significant risk of substantial harm to his/her own safety/security and the safety/security of others.

DIRECT SERVICES TO STUDENTS AND STAFF
A. Provides services in the Mainstream Program: interprets mainstream classes; transports students to and from the receiving school; serves as liaison between LSD and the receiving school.
B. Provides interpreter/transliterator services for meetings involving employees and/or LSD students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. These may include parent meetings, IEP conferences, student evaluations/assessments, testing situations and/or explanation meetings; in mental health, legal, medical and occupational settings; staff training and/or workshops.
C. Provides American Sign Language instruction to LSD staff, family members of LSD students, and the public.
D. Exhibits knowledge of special education rules and regulations associated with implementation of state and federal laws.
E. Maintains confidentiality of information in accord with requirements of the law.
F. Exhibit understanding of handicapped children and their needs; especially hearing impaired children served by the school.
G. Demonstrates appropriate and effective student management.
H. Uses common sense and sound judgment.
I. Maintains an appropriate student adult relationship.
J. Demonstrates knowledge of child growth and development.
K. Respects the individual worth and dignity of each student.
L. Maintains a safe physical environment.
M. Demonstrates assessment and evaluation skills.
N. Utilizes effective interpreting/teaching techniques to meet the needs and interests of individual students.

SUPPORT SERVICES
A. Participates in the SCPI process as a member of the SCPI Team.
B. Assists in in-service training to faculty, staff, students, parents/families, interpreters/transliterators, Sign Language teachers, other professionals and non-professionals.
C. Provides information and referral and technical assistance to a variety of governmental and non-governmental agencies, organizations and individuals.
D. Demonstrates ability in planning, organizing, and implementing.
E. Uses time effectively.
F. Demonstrates knowledge and skill in area of responsibility.
G. Demonstrates skillful and creative use of instructional aids and materials.

ADMINISTRATIVE SERVICES
A. Assists the Coordinator in the planning and implementation of projects and services assigned to the SLIS Department, including the coordination of interpreter referral, the coordination of the Sign Language Program and the coordination and implementation of the SCPI across campus.
B. Maintains the timely and accurate flow of information to and from the SLIS Department, including mainstream reports, statistics on interpreter services and sign language classes, and SCPI reports.
C. Complies with school system policies and implements school philosophy and program.
D. Displays dependability in attendance and punctuality.
E. Demonstrates reliability and punctuality in meeting obligations.
F. Exhibits professional ethics.
G. Exhibits initiative.
H. Demonstrates appropriate and effective interpersonal skills.
I. Recognizes and follows established communication channels.
J. Creates reports and maintains complete and accurate reports as appropriate.
K. Demonstrates effective expressive and receptive sign language skills.

OTHER DUTIES
A. Exhibits willingness to accept and use suggestions for improvement.
B. Develop and implement a Professional Growth Plan in conjunction with the supervisor.
C. Completes a Self Evaluation.
D. Participates in school sponsored activities as sponsor, advisor, and/or participant.
E. Performs other duties as assigned
