Exterminator: Bedbugs A Problem At Some Day Camps - Health News Story - WLWT Cincinnati

CINCINNATI,OHIO

Your kids could run into some very unwanted critters at camp this summer.

Tim Leatherman with Perfect Pest Control told WLWT that he's been busy trying to battle bedbugs at local day camps and sleepover camps. While he can't name the camps in question, he does say it's a widespread problem in the area.

One of the camps WLWT spoke with Wednesday, Camp Kern, has experienced problems in the past and is now taking proactive steps to keep it from happening again. In a letter to parents, Camp Kern said it has had three bedbug sightings in the past 13 months -- all from luggage brought in by campers and guests -- and that all were eradicated within 24 hours.

The letter details steps the camp takes to prevent bedbug infestations, which include routine checks for the bugs and treating cabins with a spray that prevents the bugs from laying eggs.

If the thought of these blood suckers invading your space sends chills up your spine, there are some steps you can take to protect your children and your home. Bedbug.com recommends you show your child a picture of bedbugs so they know exactly what the pests and their bites look like.

If you're sending your child to a sleepover camp, the website also recommends sending them with sturdy luggage, because soft-sided luggage is easier for bedbugs to access.

Also, send an anti-bedbug pillow encasement and a separate laundry bag for both clean and dirty clothes.

These are just a few steps you can take now to save you from the major headache and expense of an infestation.

Des Moines officials believe a saboteur most likely left a bag crawling with bedbugs in the hallway of a city office building.

The parasitic pests were discovered about three weeks ago inside the city's Armory Building, 602 Robert D. Ray Drive, City Manager Rick Clark said.

Custodians found a small bag full of bugs on the floor in a hallway while they were cleaning.

"It appears somebody had an ax to grind," Clark said. "It's a repugnant thing that they did."

Police are investigating the incident but have no suspects, Sgt. Lori Lavorato said.

The bag was reportedly about an inch tall, 4 inches wide and filled with bedbugs. Custodians destroyed the bag, but apparently not soon enough to stop the bugs from spreading in the building, Lavorato said.

"It's just odd that (the bag) would be placed in a hallway," she said. "Because of that, it's very possible it was an intentional act."

The building has been fumigated three times to eradicate the biting bugs, but the critters have not been wiped out.
