A 12-year-old boy who had his cochlear implant stolen from the locker of a local recreation center is getting a replacement free of charge.
A company representing the manufacturer of the implant e-mailed 9NEWS on Tuesday saying that Cochlear Americas would be shipping two cochlear implants to the family. It said Cochlear Americas would ship a right and a left processor overnight on Wednesday.

The left implant will replace the one that was stolen, the right one is a replacement for a broken right implant that the family had contacted the company about separately.

Kelly Krueger with Fleishman-Hillard e-mailed 9NEWS saying in part that Cochlear Americas "was very concerned when they heard from the mother about the situation. Cochlear honors their company promise which is to be there 'Here now. And always' - a lifetime commitment to the individuals who choose their products."

9NEWS contacted the boy's mother, Michelle Tiscerano, Tuesday night. She says she had not yet heard the news that Cochlear Americas would be sending her two cochlear implants. She said she will update 9NEWS when she receives them.

The theft on Friday happened at the Link Recreation Center in Lakewood, located at Mississippi and Reed Street.

Daniele Marrufo placed his cochlear implant inside one of his shoes, and put the shoes in a locker while he went for a swim with his brother and another friend. While they were gone, a thief went through Daniele's locker, left the shoes alone but took the cochlear implant.

The implant is worth about $10,000. Daniele can't hear anything without it.

Tiscareno told 9NEWS on Monday that she believes the thief thought the implant was an ear piece for a cell phone.

9NEWS learned about this story from a news tip.

Nothing new about it...kids' implants get lost, stolen, or missing. Why did this make the news?
