Are you "embarrassed" by your hearing loss?

Rather than being embarassed, I feel very frustrated and afraid to open up. More often than not, i pretend i understand what others say. I was taught from a young age by my mother to hide the fact that I am HOH, because she thinks I'll get belittled and tells me to hide it from employers if i...

    HOH working in marketing industry?

Hi, I have a friend who is hoh and is interested in studying marketing. She wants to get insight from HOH people who have worked in the marketing industry and the challenges face as a HOH. Any replies or views would be appreciated!! Thank you!

    Kind of disappointed

I was thinking if I should apply for physiotherapy in a university and emailed the university to enquire if HOH people were eligible to enrol in the course. Sadly, I received a reply stating HOH people were not eligible to apply for it due to the nature of the course. Feeling kind of...

Has anyone ever struggled working in groups?

I do as well.. i sometimes miss out small details when working in a group. I also hate to do meetings since I would miss a lot information. I was told to improve on my pronunciation by a lecturer. So i told another lecturer about the problems i faced and how my speech may not be clear so he...

Well I think they only bothered to inform teachers back then.. since I would only visit the school dentist twice a year. I do hope no one else experienced the same thing then. He was such a surly dentist.

    Would you date hearing?

Rather than focusing on whether they hear or not, i let my body or brain decides if I am attracted to them. I don't think it matters if they hear or not because if you love that person, you would be willing to communicate or find ways to work it out :)

    Anyone on snapchat?

I don't use it often but it sure updates me on what my friends do or eat. The filters are really fun! Try it! They eat a lot of mobile data though

Wow that is a really rude teacher. Sometimes i wonder why some teachers become teachers if they were never there to teach or ensure everyone learns well? I had my fair share of rude teachers. I always covered my HA with my hair since I felt comfortable without people pestering me and i guess...

Why is the deaf/hoh community so isolating

I know how you feel.. more often, rather than being afraid of the job, im more afraid of the interaction between people! I guess i can say i hate being isolated/lonely. It makes me feel really down when I'm alone. Everytime its a big group, i struggle so much and everyone seems to understand...

I can't believe it's gonna be almost 16 years since...

Amazing that AD came so far and I believe it was able to keep going because of everyone here. I'm fairly new and I believe there will always be new people streaming into AD to make friends, improve knowledge and find comfort in others :)

Did you know that cleaning your ears with a q-tip is bad for your hearing?

I think its fine to use it after a shower/taking HA out since its already so hot and stuffy. I think the wax would have melted to a certain point, making it easier to clean. It gets itchy so cleaning it feels addicting when the itch stops. When i was young i didnt know better. Poked my eardrums...

I'm hoh living in a world of hearing that i don't quite belong in...

Hello! A late welcome to AD! I totally understand your feelings because I experienced the same thing growing up. But don't let that affect you! We all lose friends along the way regardless whether you are hearing or hoh. Its a process of life. Eventually there will always be those who cherish...

I get this a lot!! Just earlier today my brother in law was whispering to me and obviously it looked like he was mumbling!! I just tried to follow but urgh the frustration.. I guess this is something we all have to deal with because they can't relate or know how much we can actually hear. But...

    Social workers anyone?

I agree because my mum does things a hearie can do and doesnt understand her condition. I ever told her about learning ASL but she seemed reluctant to learn despite making my siblings and I having to shout at her for her to hear us. Then she goes mad saying "why are you shouting at me?!" Talk...
