What Are Jobs Deaf People Can't Do?

Depending on the level of deafness, being a NYS EMT may not be possible. One of the certification criteria is that EMTs need to be able to communicate to the hospital via radio in English.

    Parent needs information please.

Forget about whether they're Deaf, would you want the communication style/accent/colloquialisms to change for a 4-5 year old every marking period? OMG, consistency and predictability are important for that age group.

    16/Hearing/NY; glide

"Upstate" can be a huge area. What area specifically are you in? The Capital District, Glens Falls, Saratoga regions have regular Deaf meetups. Of course if you're near Rochester NY there's PLENTY of opportunities.

    NTID/RIT or Gallaudet?

Yes, NTID/RIT could be consider vocational to certain extent, but it is WHITE collar vocations, computers, technology, etc NOT blue collar. That's pretty much the case at any college that teaches programming/computer science. By the time they develop curriculum to match the latest...

    "English" signs? I'm confused.

Actually American Sign Language results from the various "home sign languages" of the New England (Connecticut in particular) region merging with French Sign Language. This is due in large part because the original school's (American School for the Deaf) director was Laurent Clerc and used FSL...

To sign or not to sign, and in what language?

A French foundation is irrelevant to LSFB since signed languages are totally independent from spoken language. In fact they have their own linguistic tree.

Books on Deaf Culture as mentioned by AllDeaf users

I think you may be looking for "I'll Scream Later" by Marlee Matlin (ISBN 1439102856). I haven't read it yet but it looks to be an autobiography.

    Medical interpreting

Reba's replies were right on. Given that you are striving to be a medical interpreter you need to be professional wherever you are. You need to conduct yourself on a higher level than the average person coming here asking questions. As a former EMT how I presented myself in the community I...

We. Have. A. Big. ****ing. Problem. Here.

Why is that surprising? The Deaf ASL teachers were telling people not to accept work for which they were NOT qualified for. What is MORE surprising is that BOCES is hiring people to positions for which they are NOT qualified for. If they were following the law they'd be hiring RID or NAD...

We. Have. A. Big. ****ing. Problem. Here.

I did. In fact, not only did our (Deaf) ASL teachers make that clear, but also not to accept job offers to interpret for BOCES positions. They were emphatic that our local BOCES typically hired "anybody with a pulse who knew ASL" but it was also a good way to get a bad name in the Deaf community.

Asl teaching: on behalf of the Deaf community

No. I'd rather learn from a native signer (Deaf, CODA, etc) than a hearing person. Put it another way, I'd rather learn the language right than incorrectly from someone who is teaching their second language. All my teachers were Deaf (except for one CODA in ASL 1) and it makes a HUGE difference.

    Struggling with ASL

Definitely find a Deaf meetup, class, anything that gets you in contact with other Deaf adults. Learning from your son (as Frisky said) will help too. But if your son is at a residential school for the deaf you may not see him that often (you didn't say one way or the other) for that to be...

Why I don't like most hearing males?

Indeed they do, but I'm fascinated as to why that's the case.

Why I don't like most hearing males?

Yes, actually. I'm learning to speak Welsh, as well as Old English and Ancient Irish. But assuming your supposition that ASL isn't "useful" (to men) that doesn't really address the question as to why more females (presumably given their rates of attendance in ASL classes) find a use for it...

Why I don't like most hearing males?

Either way ("lazy" vs "disinterest") it's something I've noticed too. And it'd be interesting to learn more about the "why" that's behind it.

Why I don't like most hearing males?

That's exactly how I took the OP's original statement before everyone started jumping on him for the gross exaggeration and applying it to other languages. In my ASL 1-3 classes I was the only guy out of 15-20 women. Additionally, in the Deaf meetups I attend, an inordinately high ratio of...

Is this a valid reason to wanting to be deaf?

In the end I did that. Very strange/interesting situation. It also looks like Angel's statement that she's "lost all of [her] hearing" isn't accurate since as "the hair cells in the cochlea become ineffective, they "recruit" their (still working) neighbor hair cells to "hear" the frequency the...

Question for HS ASL teachers or past students

In the Middle School (and now HS) where I work, the name signs for teachers are standardized. Basically, it's a fingerspelled "Mr(s)+First letter of last name" over the heart when in that teacher's class. Outside that particular classroom the entire last name is fingerspelled since there would...

    Name sign?

<Thumbs up!> :ty: Even though I took ASL 1-5 and had Deaf friends (going back 20+ years) I wasn't give a name sign until quite recently. Of course when your name is "Dan" fingerspelling it is pretty quick and easy :)

Is this a valid reason to wanting to be deaf?

I'm a bit confused by Angel and Naida's comments. If the people in question are "profoundly deaf" and/or have "lost all of their hearing" how are loud noises painful? Is the auditory signal gone but replaced by one of pain instead?
