Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

Unfortunately, he doesn't have any goals in his IEP about socialization right now. They keep putting that he's making "great progress" in his present levels statements, but I'm not seeing that. It's definitely on my list of goals that MUST be included this time around. He definitely has the...

    dysgraphia/problems with handwriting

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely look into that. I completely agree with your other points. It's so hard having HoH kids sometimes. They don't fit into the "boxes" everyone wants to put them in. ;)

    dysgraphia/problems with handwriting

Reed keyboards great, and seems to do fine with other fine motor (buttons, Legos, etc), but handwriting continues to be a challenge. He's uncoordinated in general, but getting better as he gets older. His handwriting still resembles an average kindergartener, though, and he'll be in 7th grade in...

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

Good point. That's what I was going for with that statement, but in re-reading it doesn't really have the weight I was looking for. I'll keep working on that part. He has services from the "hearing consultant", but she doesn't actually work with him. She just services the FM equipment and...

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

Just realized that I forgot to answer CSign's question. His goals so far have been mostly focused on his Asperger's. His hearing goals are exclusively related to wearing his hearing aid consistantly (which he doesn't like and has had numerous problems with this year). He wears a bone anchored...

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

Yes, please! I welcome any feedback I can get. I don't think I have enough posts yet to PM, but I'll try to find some way to contact you if you don't find this post again. :) Everyone here is so welcoming and helpful. Thank you all!

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

I think I originally found this in an article on DeafEd at Hands & Voices. It was probably an error. I will change this in my printed copy. Thank you for catching this. :) He does wear glasses, but isn't really considered low-vision. I included the DB statement based on recommendations from a...

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

It's possible (or, likely, lol) my understanding of the concept is faulty. I understood inferential learning to be concepts learned indirectly or "inferred" from things overheard that are not directed at the hearer. Perhaps I should rephrase?

    dysgraphia/problems with handwriting

My son has a profound unilateral loss as well as dysgraphia. I'm interested in reading the research you've found. I'm happy to answer any questions about our experiences so far, but so far we haven't found much success overcoming it.

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

In addition to a HUGE binder full of research, I've also written up a brief statement of our reasons for wanting to change his communication mode and what we're seeking from the district. Please let me know if you see any holes in my statement. Thank you all for your input! :) Thoughts?

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

BTW, MSD has been nothing but supportive of our efforts to get his placement there. The problem is that right now his Aspergers is listed as his primary disability on his IEP. Up till now it hasn't mattered what order they were listed, but under Michigan sp. ed rules they can't do anything until...

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

Oops, got ahead of myself in my original post. He also has Asperger Syndrome. He is extremely high functioning (we like to tell him he's too smart for his own good, lol). The only area he struggles in academically is writing. He is a very concrete, visual thinker and has a hard time thinking...

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

I am embarassed to admit that I tend to SimCom with him because his receptive skills are so basic right now. I am seeing his understanding start to increase so I am trying to wean off the speaking and sign more exclusively. Unfortunately, because he isn't yet used to watching for my signing, I...

Thank you so much CSign. Don't know why it wasn't showing up for me before.

Can we switch HoH son's communication mode now?

Changing communication preference and placement I posted a long post yesterday about this, but it doesn't appear to have showed up anywhere. So, I'm trying again. First an introduction since I'm new: I'm Stephanie. My son Reed is 11.5 and was born with a profound sensorineural loss in his...
