    Confronting an audist parent

SL in any form will not help me. No one in my sphere signs or even gets what it means to have compromised hearing. I do love standing in front of the hearing with their iPods in their hears.

    Confronting an audist parent

My dad lost his hearing over a number of years, which is why I argue with my mom over his hearing.

I was hoping to relate to other people in similar situations. If you have nothing to add- don't post here.

Yeah, my dad is virtually deaf and like him I have lost my hearing while my mom and siblings have not.

I didn't connect audism to racism. I find your hostility very offensive.

FRUSTRATION. I can see it! Because they are frustrated. Yelling at families members is a hard thing to do. I am frustrated. I always turn on CC when he is around and demand they talk to his face.

    Confronting an audist parent

They fell in love as teenagers, when his hearing was compromised and then got so much worse. I think my mom imagines hears as he did as a teenager. My dad is in his 70s, I am in my 30s. He has always been 'deaf' to me. I never talk to him unless he is facing me. I wish people did the same for...

He has no idea. I think he went from HoH to virtually deaf during his marriage and raising us. I always treated him as deaf with lip reading.

    Confronting an audist parent

I have never told my dad "NEVERMIND". I go up to him and get his attention and then speak to him when he his reading my lips and talk to him. I am so angry because no one in my family does this.

I don't known ASL. I can communicate as long as I see lips.

    Confronting an audist parent

I don't like the way they they talk to my dad. I have struggled with hearing loss since infancy. I say audist because they talk about my dad like he is the only one. I never told my dad that we shared this in common because he has always received negative feedback.

    Confronting an audist parent

My dad is deaf or severely hard of hearing. I hate spending time with my family because I know what my mom and siblings say quietly. It is almost family tradition to mock my dad. They do not get that I have hearing loss as well. I always stand up for my dad - saying things like "Do you think he...
