Absolutely. Love what CI's do for me, but would be nice not to have the hassle of magnets, cables, batteries, etc. They are what they are but it would be another thing less to think about. CI technology gives me so much, but if normal hearing gave me some more, all the better!
Until then...
I was born with normal hearing in both ears and was early in my speech & language development.
At almost 3 years old, I lost my hearing completely in my left ear to the point where it did not respond to any sound, and in my right I was left with a severe profound hearing loss, with most...
I can't call myself "functionally HOH" when my non-bionic hearing friends tell me that I hear things that they don't. And when they have to ask for repeats in noise way more than I do.
Again, as it has been reiterated so often on this board, hearing history and amount of time worn & rehab...
Because when you say that the benefit from the CI varies hugely, you're communicating it to sound like it varies hugely just by chance, as if there aren't variables involved. And that is where your argument becomes flawed.
I can relate to this somewhat. While I'm not a professionally trained musician and didn't have normal hearing, I had fairly good ear for music for a hearing aid user. I could tune a guitar by ear and I could definitely tell when someone played a wrong note or something. I did use electronic...
I don't know if it's relevant since now I have a CI, but when I had hearing aids, any analog aids I wore were definitely hit or miss as far as sports went. I could wear them for baseball and hiking if the weather was cool outside, but forget backpacking and climbing in the summer. Even ear gear...
I love music with my AB cochlear implants. Growing up, my dad played drums. I played trumpet with severe to profound hearing loss and I had a love for music. I didn't hear well enough to get all the fine detail of everything, but I did hear adequately enough to play in school bands and the like...
At least you are hearing something! Hopefully what you are hearing is useful input. It should only get better from there as long as you're giving the CI time alone every day.
You can address the magnet issue at your next mapping. Sometimes swelling can contribute to how well a magnet is...
The CI is a totally different way of hearing. Whether or not one has prior auditory stimulation, it's an electric current thats being sent, and you're going to feel like certain things are just jolting to you, in some form, in auditory and in tactile sensations.
You just have to give it a lot...
I would not wait if an ear scored 50%. That's right on the border. You wouldn't accept 50% to be considered good on a test, so why would you accept 50% as satisfactory on a speech evaluation? 50% means that you're still missing half of what's going on. That's a lot.
The OP does not need a...
Not everyone will want an IDR 80, and that's fine, but there is a huge difference between using it exclusively over time and constantly switching between that setting and another program slot with different settings.
I started off with CV medium. I found it mostly OK but it would make people...
Just out of curiousity, do you use an Ultrazoom program and if so, do you use 80 IDR on that, too?
I too prefer an IDR of 80 in general and have that on all of my programs except UZ. I believe my audiologist is correct in that having 80 IDR on UZ is more unecessary than not, but I am curious...
Do you know which sound processing strategy you are on, S vs P? Different people respond to strategies a little differently, most people seem to favor one over the other. It is helpful to know which sound processing strategy you are using for each program as well as the IDR, etc.
I...
Yeah, I'm also wondering where the OP is getting the idea that CI's would be of very limited help with a less than 80% WDS.
In 2013, I had a WDS of 80%. It had been around that for most of my life, at least, for my adulthood as far as I can tell.
In 2014, my WDS varied over a period of 6...
I also use my iPod shuffle with regular earbuds. That I can do because of the t-mic and my music program uses the t-mic as its microphone source. I've also plugged my earbuds into the airplane seat and watched a movie while flying.
I find that my ComPilot- which can be used with Phonak...
