Asteroid Headed Toward Mars

On Earth, it would be a catastrophic event big enough to wipe out hundreds of square miles of life.

But on Mars, the impact of a big asteroid will be nothing more than a great show.

Scientists at NASA are closely watching an asteroid that might hit Mars on Jan. 30.

Right now it's too far away to be certain where it will hit.

Telescopes and spacecraft will watch for the impact on Mars if and when it happens.

I wonder if we will see the asteroid smash on the mars from this planet? It must be interesting to see it without telescope

If it does hit Mars, there is hope that the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter or the Mars Odyssey spacecraft would see it enter.

This reminds me of when those pieces of a comet hit Jupiter.

According to the latest NASA update I could find (January 2, 2008), the chances that Asteroid 2007WD5 will strike Mars on January 30 have increased to 3.6 % or 1-in-28.

Of course that data still leave a chance of 96.4% that the asteroid will miss Mars.
