As a "chair" user myself, I was just curious if there are other members at AllDeaf that are also chair users. I know of at least 2; me and one other member I know.

I did a search and while the word wheelchair* has come up a number of times, I could not find any actual threads where this thread's topic was specifically discussed.

Again, I'm just curious to see who else is rolling around out there...

Dave

P.S. In case you are wondering, yes, I did see the "wheelchair sex" thread. ;)

I'm a hearing wheelchair user. Was born with spina bifida. I have a deaf friend who referred me to the site two years ago. Since then, I've aquired other deaf/HoH friends from this site.

:)

OceanBreeze,

Thanks for the reply! I hope that the rain and winds from the tropical storm are not too bad down there. We are supposed to see it sometime Friday.

As for being a chair user, I have a rare, degenerative neuromuscular disorder called MELAS. It's not MD but is one of the disorders that the MDA programs support.

Anyway, nice to meet you. Just thought I'd ask this question in case any of the AD members had a question for other wheelers. :) BTW, I use both a manual and a powerchair.

Take care!

Dave

HI Dave! We actually got off light with Ernesto. It was wet, but no damage. Just have cabin fever now, which I can do w/o.

As for me, I have been chair bound most of my life. I used braces/crutches when I was small, but went to the chair when i was 11 yo. I use a manual chair, which I prefer. It's about the only exercise I get. I had to use a scooter once when I was young, due to a shoulder injury. Just about made me crazy! I didn't care for it.

Yea I have a manuel chair and scooter. I have crutches cain walker ect but my balance is so bad I mostly sit. Usually transfer to my computer chair. And scoot with my feet the spokes on my chair catch my fingers so I hate doin that. I had surgery for a shunt in 1998 when I woke up I could not walk went through therapy and stuff. It got better then worse off and on.

Soonersseth,

Howdy to you too! I see you listed as a college student. May I ask what you are studying? I am an electrical engineer from many moons ago. LOL

Shunt?? are you on Dialysis????

Wheeling Rev, I am a part time chair user. Like very very part time.....not too often but I mean I will use a manual chair if I get tired, due to mild hypotonia and orthapedic probs.

Spina Bifida

Since issues associated with spina bifida has arisen in the thread, I thought I'd give you all information about it.

Please take a look at link. If you have any question, you can ask them here, or if you wish, you may PM me.

I would also like to add a couple things to the "effects". In addition to the things listed there, people with SB also experience an increase risk of infections and skin breakdown. This is what put me in the hospital last year.

I was born with myelomeningiocele, the most severe form.

Hello Dave. I am a deaf wheelchair user. I got hit by a car when I was 3 years old. My brain stem was damaged in some ways that controls the left side of my body. I have weak muscles on the left side of my body. That doesnt mean I am parayzled. I can walk some with a walker. Whenever I get tired of sitting too long, I use my walker to stand up and walk around for a bit. I use manual wheelchair and powerchair.

SxyP:
there are two different types of shunts here. the one you're talking about an AV shunt which by you know of for Renal Dialysis patients. The other is able to drain CSF which can be in excess due to a number of diseases or tumors. This prevents increased ICP and further complications for patients who will chronically need the fluid drained to maintain normal ICP. most of these shunts end up somewhere else in the body to drain. Some people have them drain into the venous system returning to the heart. One patient I knew had a shunt from his brain travel all the way down into his peritoneum where it drained out.

OB, I almost forgot.......one of my medical reports says that I have spina bifida occulta. Oh and thanks for sending me over to Wikkipedia......that place is addicting!

Nice to meet everyone! Now that I know I'm not the only wheeler around here, I'll know that I can ask some wheeling questions as they relate to the Deaf if I ever need too. Dave

Mine does. I've actually had both types. When I was a baby, they directed the shunt down to my perirtoneal cavity, but my kidneys couldn't handle the volume of fluid that drained per day, so they had to redirect the shunt to my venous system. I've had a V/C shunt since the age of 6.

Heh.

SBO is rather mild. As for Wikipedia, it was an easy link with little to no technical crap to bog people down with.

I'm also shunted. However, I've not needed dialysis. Hopefully, I won't ever need it.

Yeah I understand...My friend was born with Spina Bifida...She had 4 kidney tranplants... last one was about two years ago,,, she is doing fine so far.. she wear leg braces when she wishes to use crutches..Most of times she uses power wheelchair...she is only 40 yrs old..She craves for bf... she had one for long while.. then that guy dumped her... she chases after him.. I can understand she is lonely... in a way i dont blame her... she is beautiful...
