I'm new here, and really disappointed to find out we don't have a political section. Does this community actually support having it shut down?

I'd rather deal with endless trolling than have our freedom of speech under attack.

What say you?

I'd say if you believe politics can be limited by a section you're deeply mistaken.

Follow the white rabbit..

A lot of members do miss it...:giggle:...no pun intended here...just remembered my ol' grandfather sitting on the store-front (the only store in a very small town in N.C.)..."blazing red" in the face...arguing with them Repubs....He was about 5'10 and only around 120lbs...and had this Demmy-o-crat in a head lock and they were rolling on the ground....:laugh2:

The debates got so heated here...some members were actually "on fire!"...couldn't take the heat....

We did have a political section it got very personal and I guess some people complained about so it was shut down. I miss it and would love to see it back here.

No politics due to The Tsar Alex. This makes alldeaf a one party system.

I understand what you're saying, but I don't think we should have to settle for that.

Yes, and anyone who is frustrated/offended by a conversation here is not obligated to continue with it. I don't understand the need for any administrator to "protect" me by locking a thread or forum. It's patronizing. And I'm not trying to argue with you here, just taking the opportunity to make a point :)

Really? How so? Because if people actually requested the forum be shut down... :pissed:

But then again, no tax either.

Huh?

In most one-party systems, there's no tax and no representation :) actually there's no reason for anyone not to create a deaf forum that discusses politics if they want. Anyone should be able to show you how to get one set up, all the parts are free.

It's just that, I guess, if you're in Alex's "country", I guess you got to abide by his laws, otherwise you could set up your own "country" where you can have your own laws :)

I, for one, am glad they closed it. Those people in there did nothing but argue. :ugh2:

Supposing the politics forum was still open, is it not reasonable to suggest that you exercise your freedom to avoid the politics section, so others can exercise their freedom to view it?

I just don't understand why it's so hard for people to avoid a forum/discussion if they wish to avoid it. It's not my intention to pick a fight here, but I would like to hear your reasons for wanting it closed.

Oh, Tsar Alex is the administrator? Yes, the admin can do whatever he/she wants with their site, of course. And yes, I'll leave, if it annoys me enough. I'm just trying to figure out why he shut the forum down... if he's locked it due to majority complaint, or if the mods couldn't handle the trolls, or what. Because if it isn't due to a majority complaint, there's hope we can bring it back. I don't see any harm in the admin hearing what the community has to say about this.

That said, I also wasn't aware message boards ever locked entire forums because of a little heat. I'm kind of shocked by it, so a bit curious about the specifics of the situation. I might have to search some old threads in the politics forum to figure it out for myself though, because no one here has been able to bring up particulars yet. We'll see.

This site needs a flaming pit. I'd have a ball in there.

Religion and politics are two discussions that tend to alienate and enrage people, especially on the internet. Have you participated on either subjects actively, longer than 2-3 years on a forum?

AllDeaf is no stranger to fierce head-butting and members publicly/privately requesting punitive measures due to the arguing. It doesn't contribute to keeping a forum community together, and lastly requires constant supervision by the Admin/staff.

Put it in a simpler context, Alex was tired of reading and spending hours to clean up the 'crap' that went around between members who would never change, even after punishment was given.

Guessing so many of our "heavy-weight" members have left because of the ban ??...Some rarely do post now-a-days....sure do miss 'em...

Yes I have. In fact over a decade. We have AWESOME moderators there who are able to make it work.

Feel there is something that would make it work....any suggestions?....

Yes, thank you.

Thanks for pointing that out. It doesn't surprise me to hear that.

Yes, I spent 4 years on typologycentral.com. You're right, arguing doesn't contribute to keeping the community together. But while it may keep the peace, it doesn't promote true togetherness... you can't really get to know someone unless you discuss controversial or touchy issues. And you cannot challenge others or be challenged without this friction. But I realize not everyone values these things, or feels they are worth fighting for.

If your post is any indication of how Alex/mods dealt with trolls or unruly members, it's not wonder they had to close a couple forums... those people who did not "change" after punishment, should have been banned. Typology Central trolls did not last long, they banned members promptly and so trolling or flaming was a rare thing. I can certainly understand the amount of work it takes to deal with trolls though on such a large message board as this, I guess Alex couldn't find enough willing mods?

Feel there is something that would make it work....any suggestions?....

Well I haven't been on this forum long enough to say, so I would encourage long time members to give us their thoughts on what they think is preventing these message boards from having a free but tolerable atmosphere. Whether it's an insufficient amount of mods, or having the wrong mods, (who are not willing to ban) etc.

Only way to get up a political or religious forum would be with radomly assigned screen names that change often. Otherwise all the baser instincts carry over to the whole site. But would be fun to sling some sheet with no name

This has been discussed many times in few threads... the main culprit is members fighting/arguing that gets out of hand so often.

This has nothing to do with censorship, some people doesn't know how to have civil debates unfortunately.

You're free to discuss religious or political subjects via PM or Visitor Message in member's profile, but not in public forum.

Yeah too many members got whined then they DID report to moderators a LOT!!!!! now you see why the political section is closed.

if no one reports to mods then political section would be very much alive. sadly!
