Tropical storm Irene approaches

I'll be staying with my family but I'm bit eerie about our condo window. It's rated for 80mph. I think my family should come to my apt :dunno:

I guess we'll see tomorrow
One window? If you stay in a room or hall away from that window, it should be safe. Keep on hand a tarp for sealing up the hole afterwards if it does break.

It's not just the wind rating that's important. It's how well can it withstand a projective piercing it.

do you think the elderly people were duct-taped to their seat because their buses are not equipped with seat belts?
No. The drivers and aids said it was so they wouldn't get out of their seats.

I hope the zoos, aquariums, and farm animals in the path of Irene will be safe.

I remember the animals from Charlestowne Landing had to be sheltered in the restrooms because they don't have cages there. (The animals are in natural outdoor enclosures.)

Wow, this looks like a huge storm. I always have CNN on, and they're really covering this hurricane. I hope that has helped some get ready. My SO and I were just saying that (while not really applicable since I live in the midwest and thus no hurricanes here, but just theoretically,) we don't think my house is in any way ready to withstand a hurricane -- it is a 4 story home, but 1/2 of it is underground so it's not even tall enough to stand on the roof in the event of major flooding, I don't think. Will keep all of you who may be affected by this hurricane in my prayers.

Well, we are back in Alexandria. Not a bad trip at all. The usual time, with good traffic, is about 5 hours. Today it took us 6, and that included a 15 minute rest-stop, for ourselves and doggies to stretch our legs and do the necessary. So really not at all bad, much better than I had expected. They didn't charge the usual toll on the Chesapeake Expressway, just waved everyone through so as to keep the traffic moving.

Got home, went shopping - grocery store almost completely out of milk, of all things, but ample supplies of everything else. I bought things that we can eat even if the power goes out. We may be living on peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, sitting around in the dark. ;-)

Other than that - found out that the earthquake knocked one picture off the wall (didn't break the glass, fortunately, as it fell on carpet), knocked some candles out of their sconces, a little knick-knack fell off a shelf. Nothing serious at all. THEN - discovered a jagged crack under one window, from the window sill to the floor. Phooey. That will have to be fixed, spackled, re-painted. And good luck matching paint, after 10 years... Sigh.

So now we hold tight and wait for Irene. I guess we're ready.
:hmm: Accent paint?

Its direct to my home! :( :( :(

oh no!

If you have duct tape around, I'd tape the window glass in X form, it gives it extra holding power, and if it does break, then the tape will prevent some of it flying too far in your room.

Just saw some pictures on the news of Nags Head. The storm is beginning to swirl around there, and some roof shingles are already flying around.

The good news - the tide is going out, not coming in, so that should help some in terms of protecting the beach itself, and properties right along the beach.

email from my sister this AM...(Wilmington, Hampstead, Jacksonville, N.C., Atlantic Beach, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach, Fort Fisher, Kure Beach area).....saying they were good...and she will go to check on my other sister and other family members soon as the roads are passable....1 Man was killed when he went outside and a tree fell on him....Pier at Atlantic Beach heavily damaged (in the middle).....lots of Power Outage everywhere....Otherwise, my family is safe.

I just saw that on the news. How very sad.
