Tropical storm Irene approaches

Finally, the outer band of clouds from Irene are here ..looks beautiful out in the dark sky. All is still calm but very very very warm and humid.

I hope evacuations have improved since the one I was in:

King of Chaos: The Fiasco of Floyd

Hey now! That's a couple of Arkies your referring to! BTW I live 20 minutes away from Witt's Ranch, and yes I have met Mr. Witt.

At least Witt knew what he was dealing with, whereas that Arabian horse dude that was director during Katrina couldn't tell his head from his rear-end in a hurricane - Witt was Bill's choice, Arabian horse dude was Bush's choice.

I'd much rather place my bets on Witt running FEMA than the other dude.

Also, because of Witt, our county has one of the most sophisticated OEMs in the state for a rural area and it didn't cost us boocoos of dollars that the county didn't have.

Our city is considered a staging area for ANO and in a case of an emergency at ANO requiring evacuation, the main road from Russellville to here is all one direction. Another town an hour from here is an evacuation area in which all the schools and churches there become shelters for displaced people. Where our house is at, we wouldn't be required to evacuate, but we would have to take precautions such as sealing off the house around windows and doorways for a few days - and that's worst case scenario. If I were required to evacuate from Russellville, I know where I have a place to go! :D

The literal calm before the storm, Shel. It actually can also be quite eery.

Yeah , I was thinking that too when I took Marty out tonight. I only saw 2 ducks flying very low in sky, it looked like they where trying to find a safe place to land. I hope all the wildlife and homeless people will be OK! I did not hear anything about how the cities and towns plan to take care of their homeless people. :(

The Situation Here

I am in a mandatory evaculation zone. We are evaculating tomorrow to my sister's house to ride out the storm. The store where I work was extremely busy today.

I will be thinking of you! Please be safe!

I remember that from Isabelle in 2003. Yep, it is eerie!!!

I am taking it that you aren't required to evacuate? I hope you are able to stay in touch during the storm and that you'll be safe.

Well, we are back in Alexandria. Not a bad trip at all. The usual time, with good traffic, is about 5 hours. Today it took us 6, and that included a 15 minute rest-stop, for ourselves and doggies to stretch our legs and do the necessary. So really not at all bad, much better than I had expected. They didn't charge the usual toll on the Chesapeake Expressway, just waved everyone through so as to keep the traffic moving.

Got home, went shopping - grocery store almost completely out of milk, of all things, but ample supplies of everything else. I bought things that we can eat even if the power goes out. We may be living on peanut-butter and jelly sandwiches, sitting around in the dark. ;-)

Other than that - found out that the earthquake knocked one picture off the wall (didn't break the glass, fortunately, as it fell on carpet), knocked some candles out of their sconces, a little knick-knack fell off a shelf. Nothing serious at all. THEN - discovered a jagged crack under one window, from the window sill to the floor. Phooey. That will have to be fixed, spackled, re-painted. And good luck matching paint, after 10 years... Sigh.

So now we hold tight and wait for Irene. I guess we're ready.

I have been watching the outer bands here in North Georgia. They started to arrive about 3 hours ago.

Man that sucks. However, if you don't feel safe to go to work, you don't have to. You have a a VERY good reason to call in! I hope you don't get stuck there either. I wouldn't want to ride out a storm anywhere but home.

No, not really. I have been watching the doppler and everytime the outer band clouds go East - sure enough, I can see them where I am.

Hmm, you might get a light soaking if anything.
