FCC Announces New Rules for 800/866/877 Numbers No Longer Free

Excellent, I'm sick of resident use toll-free as their prime number. It mean for business only.

I applaud the FCC about 800/866 toll free because many hearing people always confuse about toll free telephone. I think FCC orders all VRS/TRS will give local phone number to their users.

Qwerty can't blame FCC period ;)

Why everyone is thrilled to have FCC banned 800/866. I really dont care about this.

hearing would be confuse when we, deaf give the number to them. They were like.. wow, you own business or being BS?

You assumed that hearing people are confused about this number? I find it hard to believe since they learned that 800 and 866 is free call. Hearing people save their phone bill.

you miss the point macfreak.. before vrs, itrs came along, hearing even the deafies have a mental state of the 800's number is for business. and they still do. having a real personal number is better as it resolves a few things. Where are you "normally" calling from/to. 911 address issues. and force a standard to implement that if you move, you really should be having the local area numbers to identify you in the region so caller id can be traced on reverse lookups and such.

the 800 numbers is great for hearing who KNOW you and want to make a long distance call and can save money. god knows we need every way can save in today's economy. we only need ONE 800 number for that purpose. why pass out more then 2 for each deaf/hoh? its ridiculous! business or other reason you come up with is fine for more then 1 800's numbers if you have a want/need for it.
But I bet if you did a inventory of each deaf/hoh person and find ALL the vrs's numbers assigned to them, they would have more then 5 for sure.

unfortunately, today, we are STILL experimenting with ideas and technologies of VRS, iTRS, TRS, etc..and still coming out with more relay companies and ideas so at this point its somewhat a necessity until we come up with a SAE/ISO standard for relay numbers to reduce relay numbers and make it easy to switch between services and companies with a couple numbers, kinda like a purple number accounts. Right not account numbers with same address book and features not implementable across different VRS's and TRS's and companies except for phone number transfers.

I am abit confused. What if I want to call someone out of state and I don't have any phone - just VP? How do I pay for the long distance????

you said no phone then you can not make or receive calls

Yes, you are confused.
Your VP (Videophone) does not use telephone system. Your Videophone uses Internet system and there is no phone billing though the Internet. So making outgoing calls regardless of which number used will not charge you a penny.

Im not sure why there is confusion with 800 number. The sole purpose of 800 number is to allow hearing person call you without paying long distance rate. The 800 number has no effect on Deaf person and Im still confusing why they are making it huge deal even though Deaf VP user don't have to pay a penny.

Good answer, diehardbiker

If you keep 800 number service, you are paying them monthly fee, FCC don't allow VRS funds to be paying them. You must explain all of hearing callers know which local numbers are no charge to pay for long distance calls.

from a deaf point of view- nothing really changes for you. no cost.

from the hearing point of view, they will just lose the ability to save money on a long distance call to a deaf person. Instead they pay the rate from whatever area code they call from and to, just like pre-VP days with tty's/tdd's but its both ways.

clear as mud yet?:aw:

Oh, Duh!!! It is only for 800 numbers not 866. I must have got nervous when I read Jay's post in that link.. he said 800/866. Thank you and now I am relieved.
