Should ASL be reserve to culturally Deaf people only?

There's a big propaganda that CIs in time will fix the hearing loss; thus, the child will be functionally hearing while the CI on...if that's the case then the child needs only spoken language.

Except the child is not going to be functionally hearing overnight. It takes a long time to process all of the components needed.

There is no propaganda saying it will fix (i.e. cure) hearing loss but rather it will assist or help with their hearing loss. Just like a hearing aid can. How we derive positive benefit from it is another step.

Here's a quick example of propaganda that's plastered everywhere. I do know this article is not peer-reviewed, etc., but how many people really know that? All they see is "hearing loss is REPAIRED."
Hearing Loss News and Articles: Cochlear implant to repair hearing loss for teenager

You know...deaf people see articles or this kind of wording and take it to heart saying that hearing people want to "fix" deafness with CIs but when the deaf community expresses that, they are "wrong".

Who is right and who is wrong?

"repair"="fix"?

Was the writer writing in the context saying that a CI is a cure for hearing loss and that it will cure hearing loss? Or was it in the context like fixing one's vision impairment with a proper eyewear prescription?

If it was in that context, fine but when the Deaf community say that people want to "fix" deafness with CIs, are they wrong?

Where did the concept of "fix" come from anyway?

Ok then should it matter where the article came from? Hearing people out there are implying that deafness is something that needs to be fixed hence the message being sent to the deaf community hence the rebellion for that audist views and then heairng people turn around and tell the deaf community that they are the problem?

Where is the responsibility?

Let me give you a hint:

Old english bible. I don't know if translating another country's language into English is part of the problem or not.

Who termed the phrase "deaf and dumb"?

Who linked CI to "cure"?

Who?

The Deaf community?

They may use a different word but where did that phrase come from? hearing people.

It's the lack of education. The guy who wrote that "cure" article doesn't understand the meaning of the word "cure" and that CI is NOT a cure. Not about propaganda but a lack of understanding there.

All this talk of CI's is boring. Waiting for the fad to wither on the vine. Ho hum.

Dumb wasn't suppose to be a bad word. It was hearing because I doubt deaf people would lower themselves like that. Unless they feel that way around hearing people.

I do think some deaf call CI a cure.

Ok that's fine..I understand but it did lead to the propaganda and then the Deaf community got the message indirectly. Then, the Deaf community saw that the CI was an attempt to cure deafness. That is the point.

However, what sucks is that whenever the Deaf community talk about CIs being a cure, they get attacked for for it.

It started somewhere...did the Deaf community start it or did the media or those in the medical field?
