I post this thread for PrincessBetty1 cos she is still a newbie and is unsure which thread will be in a section.

Here's her comment:

I am not interested in using FM system (transmitter device) and it has a lot of issue in the past. And that I wish to not continue using it in high school year. Do you know if there's a loophole to get out of the FM system? What can I do?

When I was in high school, I didn't use FM system. You have every right to say that you don't want to use FM system and just use an interpreter. I stopped using FM system when I was still in middle school. It wasn't of any help.

My last two years in high school, I was the only deaf student there and I had one same (AWESOME) interpreter all day every day! :)

Oh and just talk with the teachers and let them know of your feelings about the FM system. :)
 
When I entered high school, I refused to use it. I hated the stigma that went with it. I just simply took it off one day and never used it again. I just wore my HAs. What can the teachers do to you? If anything, my grades went up even more to all A's instead of A's and B's. The FM wasn't what made my grades.
 
Since that I am from UK so rules are probably different. My school you HAD to wear them even you don't like it except final year at school when your 16. I hated wearing them so I usually fake wearing it like I don't put wires and shoes snap on my aids, I just looped it over my ears, easy yank it out at break/lunch times (every day we rush go outside get in best football {called soccer in USA} teams). As I got better at hiding it I stopped using the wires and have it wrapped around the FM box but FM box still clipped on my trousers. If teachers ask I just point at box then that it.

I thought I was right about that! All this time, my deaf teacher said that it was illegal to stop using it. I didn't want to get anyone in trouble because of that. Hm...I'll think about the interpreter, though.
 
Of course!!! That what I was thinking, my grades would go up high if I don't have the FM system! I noticed that once in a whole February month when in 7th grade, it went up so high! I knew from straight on I could make my grades a whole lot better. Thanks.
 
That's quite sneaky. I usually turned off my FM receiever that's on my right ear and just go along with everyone in classroom, though, one of my teachers was okay with it as long I was paying attention in class.
 
I have an IEP, just said if I need it. I don't see the big deal. I doesn't it's required or anything.

Maybe your deaf teacher said that because the FM was required in your IEP. If you can get an IEP that specifies no FM or FM only when you request it, then it will be "legal" to stop using it.

they are saying it is illegal because it sorta is. If it is written in your iep that they must provide an fm, they must give you one. You need to have an iep with you, your parents, and the school. If you don't want to use it, it needs taken off the iep so the school isn't out of compliance with your iep.
 
I just want to let you guys know. Betty is still confused with the forum. So I am going to make tutorials for her. Nashio already made two threads about quotes. I'm sorry if she is suddenly vanished but she will be right back for sure.
 
I had hearing aids in school and no IEP. Didn't know anything about them until I had my own child. Maybe they didn't have them back then.

Did not have an FM box, so I can't relate that bit, but I had a positive time mostly with my HA's. I didn't like them when I was 7 & 8, but at 9 & 10 I was fine. Did not have them after that due to an unfortunate issue with the school janitor. Teachers were always conscientious to make sure I had my HA's on when I needed them.

Oh I remember getting "black ball" if I didn't wear my FM system when I was in elementry school. I didn't get that often because even back then by the time I was in 4th-5th grade, I didn't really use FM system very much. Like some others mentioned, it must have been the IEP thing that got me out of it. I went back on it in middle school to give it another try... try I did and it didn't turn out well, so I knew it wasn't for me. FM system isn't for everybody. I had a college roommate who was also deaf at a hearing christian college and she relied on FM system and note takers. She was very embrassed about being deaf or labeled as hard of hearing that she goes to the extreme to pass off as an hearing person as much as possible. I found that kinda sad, although we got along pretty well back then and we still chat every now and then. :)

PrincessBetty1 I didn't realize that you don't know much ASL- so if FM doesn't do you good and you're still in the process of learning ASL... may I recommand to have one student in your classroom that is good at note taking and voluteer to take notes for you (I mean additional notes other than that were written) and you would still have an advantage of picking up ASL thru an interpreter and improve on your ASL? :)

It doesn't say that I'm required to use FM system in the IEP, it saids if I need it. Most of the time, I feel everyone wants me to use it by force. However, I want out of it. I mean, I know quite well on my IEP for what's required and everything.
My deaf teacher only said that just to get me using it. She thought I was going through a stage and I know I'm not. I just don't want to deal with the crisis I am having with. The school won't let me get it fixed or replace with a new one. So, I thought, if they're not going to do anything about it. Then, I should have the right to not use it.

Incidentally, this FM system isn't made anymore. It's Phonak FM system. I had this thing for so long, it is causing more problem and more distraction for me. I just want to focus in class than listen to static noise or hearing my hearing aid beeps constantly when the battery is just fine (on vacation, I'm finally at peace not hearing constantly with the beeping from my hearing aids).

It's alright, I'm studying ASL mostly myself and taking it slowly, but some is triggering my childhood ASL memories. Anyway, I am provided for notes *except for math unless I ask for it* and it's already on my IEP when I need it. I have been thinking of getting an interpreter, but I need more knowledge and do interpreter also allow lipreading? Sometimes it helps doing it at the same time and I become knowing it naturally.
