Just found out I have what ENT is calling a "dead ear"? Never heard of it, but says no hearing aide can help. Of course I am scheduled with 2 more specialists. I can hear with my right ear.... but waking up one day with no hearing in left has been an adjustment. Its amazing how much I miss out on, and how many times a day Im saying "huh?" only to be looked at like I am stupid. This is all new, I'm only 2 months in. My life has drastically changed and my once fearless self is suddenly terrified at all times. I try to to myself that at least I have one ear, and my health. To say this diminishes my fear, is a lie. I have left gargage disposal on for hours, have had 2 wrecks that where my fault and never had one before, have almost been hit by cars twice, find myself walking in circles seeking the direction of sound of a cell phone or voice.
Anyone have any personal advice? Many days I just want to end all this. I am a newlywed beautiful girl....feeling like my beautiful dream took a horrible intteruption that I don't know I can deal with>

You have come to the right place - there are a lot of information in here on alldeaf.com that will help you understand more about your situation. Just have a look around, you'll find plenty of resources.

Welcome to AD!

What exactly is the cause of your dead ear? Because depending on what area is "dead" you could get a CI if you so heavily rely on sound and you can't use a hearing aid..but your other side is fine? does your right ear hear normally? If it does hear at normal hearing levels and its just the one side that doesn't you could ask for a consult for a BAHA (Bone anchored hearing aid)

And welcome to AD :)

Advice? If you really feel suicidal, you should visit a mental health counselor.

And one ear hearing? You should be able to adjust eventually.

Although not one to talk, since I actually have been hit by a car, you should try to be more aware of your surroundings. It isn't that uncommon to be hit by cars if you are not alert.

hi

I'm sure you didn't come here to be told to go to a mental health professional, but I think others are just being careful. When "bad" things happen in our lives its hard not to be deeply disappointed, afraid, down... but this too shall pass. Most likely it will take a little while for you to make adjustments to all this.

I've been hearing impaired (and I know a lot of you HATE that term but I hate HOH) all my life but over the years what hearing I've had I've mostly lost. And I still occasionally get frustrated. It seems I have to work harder at most everything... driving, TV, walking in a big city, my job, even making friends sometimes. So I do understand the frustration.

It is more difficult to figure out where sounds are coming from when you only hear on one side. You will, probably, eventually adjust to what hearing you have left and you'll eventually become more visual. Looking for cars, keeping your cell phone in your pocket. For what its worth I drive every day and have not had an accident so you'll get use to that too.

If you are a dog lover or have a dog, train your dog to alert you to some sounds. My dog alerts me to about 15 different sounds so far, including someone calling my name! But in your home you could easily train your dog to let you know when the disposal is on or to run to your cell phone when it rings. My dog gets me when my teapot whistles.. this alone has saved me a fortune in teapots which I burnt up at a rate of about 5 a year!!!!

I know you are going thru a rough time but I'm sure you can get by this too.

"possumgrin".....that's unique!...But anyhow, anyone would get depressed when they lose their hearing. Lost all of mine, both ears, after a blotched surgery, all at one time. Hearing the day before, deaf the next. It's not easy, but you still have hearing in 1 ear.

Good luck with ur adjustment! Just takes time...and patience.

This is not like a backyard, little boys clubhouse where the boys post a sign that says "No Girls Allowed" Not at all, so welcome to you.

You may be surprised that it doesn't matter if you want to be told to see a counselor.

People making allusions to suicide here on AD have had the police sent directly to their door more than one time to take them to the hospital.

It is not a good idea to announce such thoughts as it is upsetting to others and not taken lightly here.

:gpost: :gpost: That make a lot of sense to me. You never know if he or she really mean it if they said they feel suicidual. I understand that very clearly. Well said, Botts. :cool2:

or maybe it is

Well if you call the police on people that seem depressed then maybe it is a good idea that they said something. But how would you get their address? Well anyways thats not the point... I was just trying to be helpful.

It is simple to get the address. But not helpful really to give the sympathy to someone who "wants to end it all."

Whether it is sincere or attention seeking behavior, it is not healthy.
