Couldn't help but think about my old garden back in New Mexico where I raised Roma tomatos, hot chili peppers, green peppers, corn, cantalopes, carrots, grapes, peaches, nectarine and black berries. My Dad was a big influence on me growing up since he loved to garden and grow fruits and vegetables in the back yard. Always loved going into the backyard and pluck handfuls of raspberries and black berries during summers. He still gardens today with many blueberry bushes, and a small garden plot in Georgia. So, it's a natural for me to do my own gardening and see the fruits of my labor (pun intended). My kids are not so much enamored with that idea except for my youngest. My wife doesn't like gardening much since she didn't grow up gardening. Can't win them all.

Gardening isn't that hard as long as you know how to manage one and that you enjoy doing it.

Any gardeners out there?

I do plenty of gardening these days. Last year, it was just a floral garden. I bought the house back in the summer of 2008, moved in the fall. So I didn't really get to do much the first summer around.

So this summer, I decided to start big.

Now, there are plenty of raspberry and blackberry bushes out in the back. There's also the watermelons and various types of cucumbers. I planted various types of tomatoes, cabbage, lettuce, spinach, carrots. I'm also growing radishes, green onion, beets, bell peppers, yellow beans, peas. There are a few herbs such as dill, thyme and basil. I may have missed some there, but I think I got most of it.

Next year, I plan to make it even bigger. So far, everything is really growing big time. I didn't even have to use some plant foods this time. Guess I was born with a green thumb.

Impressive. How much land are you sitting on?

I like to garden, and want to provide more of my family's food from our own garden. However, I'm not very good at it. I follow the directions, I've replaced all my raised bed gardens (frames and soil) but I don't get much yield except for peppers (green and red bell, and banana yellow), green onions, and sunflowers. Some of my tomato plants bear fruit. Every year my summer squash plants grow well, blossom, and then die before they produce any squash. I've tried different kinds every year. It's very discouraging. :(

I work a couple hours each day in my garden but I can't keep up with the weeds. I seem to have no problem growing them.

Calculating the amount of money, time, and sweat that I devote to my garden, I have the most expensive tomatoes in the country. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a home garden.

My lettuce and radishes start out well. I manage to harvest some before the squirrels get the rest.

The odd thing is, my front yard looks great. I just can't do as well in the back yard garden. :dunno:

This year, due to deer and squirrels, I don't know what we will get from vegetable gardening.

They are even eating the flowers!

I love to garden and keep flower beds. Taking care of the kids and critters doesn't leave me any spare time for playing in the dirt right now. One day I'll get back to it. I learned from my Grandma and my parents.

Botti, chicken wire is the solution for critters. It may not be feasible depending on how your garden is organized.

too much rain

My garden is drowning....we have had so much rain here that i just finally got the seeds and plants in and then we have had two days of non-stop downpours. Not sure if I will get anything this year.:dunno:

You would think so! My husband had used it extensively.

Iowa deer and rabbits are smart!

And with so much greenery just growing wild, you wouldn't think deer would jump over my fence just to eat peach tree bark and arborvitae branches.

But they do.

no garden here but I have a row of herbs - cilantro and basil. I'm looking into hydroponic

Wow! I would love to live next door to you!! The only thing I have time for is my herb garden, and a few tomato and pepper plants. That is because they mostly take care of themselves.:giggle: But the deer are playing heck with my tomatoes...they keep eating the top of them even though I have cages around them.

my yard has no fruits or vegetables but filled of beautiful flowers. Iris, tulips, butterfly weeds, black eyed susan, plenty of varied of the wild flowers and roses.

Well, it's a decent sized backyard for a small house, but there are still room for more next year.

Ok, how about adding sweet corn if you have long enough growing season for that?
