I want to shake that old ladys hand. Best review of Obamas presidency I have ever read.

Agree. I have always believed there is a silent majority out there in the wings. I also believe that if our electoral process was fixed you would have a much higher voter turnout.

Then why isn't the silent majority speaking up?

True. The first time I was old enough to vote was the Bush vs Gore one. I didn't like either one but Gore won the popular vote and Bush became president. I haven't voted since simply cause that told me that my vote doesn't count.

That is because the voting system isn't based on popular counts. The voting system is based on fact we vote for certain group of people which in turn votes for the President.

I completly agree with you on that.

It's because of the electoral college. That is why popular vote doesn't count.

You're from arguably the most important swing state and you're whining your vote doesn't count? Do you know why we have the electoral college in the first place?

Yes I do know why. How the hell could you have a fair election back before electricity was used? Or just think of the logistics of having to cordinate a national election count without cheating using just horses. There is no excuse to keep using that system nowdays

The reason was to make sure the small states had some voice and didn't get completely drowned out by the interest of the populous states with large cities. It was intended as a diversion from pure democracy and its inherent problems in majority rule.

Again, I ask, how do you justify your view that your vote doesn't count when you come from one of the precious battleground states that presidential candidates covet? I wish I could be so lucky.

Well let me ask you this; If we went with the popular vote would it matter what state you lived in? And how does the system we have not drown out the smaller states just as you pointed out?

As for me not believing my vote counts, Just read what I said above. The popular vote went to gore and bush won the electoral college. And bush became president. So whose vote counts and whose doesn't

I think you took the wrong lesson from an election that came down to a few hundred voters in a single swing state not too dissimilar from yours. You can bet that more than a few Floridians were kicking themselves for staying home on that election.

With a popular vote, it wouldn't matter which state you live in, but that doesn't mean that's the best way to go.

The number of electors each state sends is equal to the number of senators they get (2 each) plus the number of representatives the get (based on population). That means that no matter how small a state is, it still gets at least 3 electors.

I would say the small states didn't get drowned out in 2000. After all, they mostly voted for Bush and Bush won.

Ok I read your link but it confused the hell out of me. So I did some looking around and found this The Electoral College vs. the Popular Vote. I guess both ways are flawed but I see how the popular vote is more flawed.

I can admit when I am wrong, you just have to prove it to me. I have to get off here now cause reading that old english made my eyes bleed and brain hurt.

there are pros and cons to the EC. The only problem I have is when somebody says every vote counts when in reality, it doesnt.

It would have to be an extremely abnormal case for that to matter in a first-past-the-post system.

He has brought more Americans back to conservatism than anyone since Reagan. In one year he has rejuvenated the Conservative movement and brought out to the streets millions of Freedom Loving Americans. Name me one other time in your life that you saw your friends and neighbors this interested in taking back America!

Politicians, just by virtue of being voted into office, cause upheaval among the oppositional group. There was a lot of noise from liberals when Bush came into office, and there was a lot of noise from conservatives when Obama was elected into office.

In all honesty one year ago I was more afraid than I have been in my life. Not of the economy but of the direction our country was going. I thought Americans had forgotten what this country was all about. My neighbors, friends and strangers proved to me that my lack of confidence of the Greatness and Wisdom of the American people was flat wrong.

Yeah, and a lot of Americans were terrified of where our country was going during the 8 years of Bush. That's not saying much. People who oppose a leader or an administration will always be in fear of where the country is going while that administration holds power.

Sounds like nothing more than a bunch of observations of what happens during any political climate shift to me.
