TPriest may molested 200 Deaf boys but was never removed from the church

im not surprised. we're getting a lot of cases of priests molesting boys.

Well, that's disgraceful! He should've been removed from the church. This stinks!

i don't understand why the church downplays the grave sin of molesting children.

Because the Church has plenty of assets. Admitting culpability comes with a high price tag that the Church doesn't want to pay.

As per the story read:

The documents emerged even as the Vatican deals with an ever-widening church abuse scandal sweeping several European countries. Benedict last week issued an unprecedented letter to Ireland addressing the 16 years of church cover-up scandals there. But he has yet to say anything about his handling of a case in Germany known to have developed when, as cardinal, he oversaw the Munich Archdiocese from 1977 to 1982.

After Murphy was removed from the school in 1974, he went to northern Wisconsin, where he spent the rest of his life working in parishes, schools and, according to one lawsuit, a juvenile detention center.

Previously released court documents show Weakland oversaw a 1993 evaluation of Murphy that concluded the priest likely assaulted up to 200 students at the school.

Weakland resigned as archbishop in 2002 after admitting the archdiocese secretly paid $450,000 to a man who accused him of sexual abuse.

It was 200 deaf boys that been molested! I bet no one believed the boys when they tried to tell people they were getting raped! I read that the nuns molested a lot of deaf girls! The pope should be deflocked ! I never did like the guy! Now I know why! Is so horrible thast the church covered it up so people would still give them money!

Now the Pope himself is implicated in cover-up of sex abuse of 200 deaf boys in U.S.

A U.S. Roman Catholic archbishop warned a top Vatican office led by future Pope Benedict XVI about a priest who may have molested as many as 200 deaf boys, documents have claimed.

There was a big cover up about the abuse in Boston, Ma. This happen all over the place and it is disgusting!

In the article it said that Benedict cancelled the investigation on the basis the allegations was too old. Well, duh! child abuses allegations is never too old!

I didn't like the way Benedict addressed the Irish by placing the blame on them when the Vatican is just as guilty.

i dont understand this story!! But i read bbc news you read it!

Pope accused of failing to act on sex abuse case
BBC News - Pope accused of failing to act on sex abuse case

Pope Benedict XVI failed to act over complaints during the 1990s about a priest in the US who is thought to have abused some 200 deaf boys, victims say.

As head of the Vatican office dealing with sex abuses, the then Cardinal Ratzinger allegedly did not respond to letters from an archbishop on the case.

A Church trial of the priest was halted after he wrote to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger pleading ill health.

The Vatican newspaper said the claims were an "ignoble" smear attempt.

The Holy See has been plagued in recent months by abuse cover-up claims in Europe, echoing a similar scandal that hit the Church in the US eight years ago.

For more than 20 years before he was made pontiff, Cardinal Ratzinger led the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith - the Vatican office with responsibility, among other issues, for response to child abuse cases.

An archbishop wrote letters in 1996 to the Vatican watchdog led by Cardinal Ratzinger calling for disciplinary proceedings against Fr Lawrence Murphy, according to Church and Vatican documents.

Fr Murphy was a popular priest who is believed to have molested some 200 boys at St John's School for the Deaf in St Francis, Wisconsin, between 1950 and 1974.

A canonical trial authorised by Cardinal Ratzinger's deputy was halted after Fr Murphy wrote to the future pope asking that proceedings be stopped, despite objections from a second archbishop.

The accused priest said in the letter that he was ill and wanted to live out the remainder of his time in the "dignity of my priesthood".

Victims say Fr Murphy - who died in 1998 - assaulted boys while hearing their confessions, in his office, his car, at his mother's house and in their dormitory beds.

He was quietly moved to the Diocese of Superior in northern Wisconsin in 1974, where he spent his last 24 years working freely with children in parishes and schools, according to one lawsuit.

Lawsuits have been filed on behalf of five men alleging the Archdiocese of Milwaukee in Wisconsin did not take sufficient action against the priest.

'Fall on the sword'

At a news conference on Thursday in Milwaukee, one of the victims, Arthur Budzinski, said Fr Murphy had begun to assault him when he was 12.

Neither the clerical authorities, nor the police had intervened when he reported it, the 61-year-old said.

Mr Budzinski was asked through a sign language interpreter what he wanted to see happen now.

"Ratzinger can have all of the colonels and lieutenants they want fall on the sword for him, but eventually he has to 'fess up," the interpreter said.

Meanwhile, members of a group of clerical abuse victims who denounced Benedict's handling of the case in a news conference outside the Vatican were briefly detained by Italian police for not having a permit.

'Despicable intention'

The Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano said there was no cover-up, denouncing the allegations as "clearly an ignoble attempt to strike at Pope Benedict and his closest aides at any cost".

The Pope's official spokesman, Federico Lombardi, called it a "tragic case", but said there was no provision in Church law for automatic punishment.

He noted that police did investigate the allegations at the time but did not press charges.

The papal spokesman said the Murphy case had only reached the Vatican in 1996 - two decades after the Milwaukee diocese first learned of the allegations and two years before the priest died.

The diocese was asked to take action by "restricting Father Murphy's public ministry and requiring that Father Murphy accept full responsibility for the gravity of his acts", he added.

Last week the Pope issued an unprecedented letter to Ireland addressing the 16 years of clerical cover-up scandals.

He has yet to comment on his handling of a child sex abuse case involving a German priest, which developed while Benedict was overseeing the Munich archdiocese.

The Rev Peter Hullermann had been accused of abusing boys when the now Pope approved his 1980 transfer to Munich to receive psychological treatment for paedophilia.

The disgraced priest was convicted in 1986 of abusing a youth, but stayed within the Church for another two decades.

Still waiting for the Pope to be next.

Very unlikely. He'll just remain a very unpopular figure as this scandal worsens.

Read in the Time magazine about Pope and church scandals etc. The last time a Pope has been ousted from his position was Gregory VI in 1046 and that was for financial mismanagement.

Will be interesting to see if the Vatican will create new laws regarding paedophile priests and laws regards celibabcy etc.

Pope or no Pope...if he ever sticks out his hand for me to kiss it...I'll snatch him around and kick his ass!...This is really sick, those poor kids.

Pope Accused Of Cover-up In Sex Abuse Case
Pope Benedict Accused Of Cover Up In Case Of Rev. Lawrence Murphy By Alleged Victim Arthur Budzinski | World News | Sky News

Pope Benedict should be held accountable for doing nothing about a priest who was accused of sexually abusing as many as 200 boys, an alleged victim has said.

The head of the Catholic church was criticised by 61-year-old Arthur Budzinski who says he was abused by Rev. Lawrence Murphy, who died in 1998, aged 72.

Murphy is said to have abused children at a school for the deaf in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where Mr Budzinski had attended.

Mr Budzinski, spoke through his daughter, Gigi, about how his "innocence was stolen from him" and how the pope was aware of the abuse.

"The pope knew about this. He was the one who handled the sex abuse cases," the retired printer said at a news conference.

"So, I think he should be accountable, because he did nothing."

Murphy worked at the school from 1950 to 1974.

A lawyer bringing a lawsuit on behalf of five alleged victims has published internal church documents detailing the church's responses to the case.

In 1996, Milwaukee Archbishop Rembert Weakland wrote a letter citing Murphy's abuses to Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict.

The archbishop did not receive a reply.

As the US church took steps to try Murphy in secret in 1998, as directed by the Vatican office, the priest appealed directly to Cardinal Ratzinger.

Murphy asked to be left alone, saying he was in ill health having suffered a stroke, and had repented acts committed years earlier, according to the documents.

The Vatican office halted the investigation.

Mark Salmon, a member of a group of victims of sexual abuse by priests, said the issue was "where it belongs, and that's at the Vatican's doorstep".

"Ratzinger can have all of the colonels and lieutenants he wants falling on their swords for him, but eventually he has to fess up, and that's what I hope happens," Mr Salmon said.

An editorial in the Vatican newspaper, responding to a New York Times report about the Murphy case, angrily attacked the media.

There was "clearly an ignoble attempt to strike at Pope Benedict and his closest aides at any cost," it said. "There was no cover-up in the case of Father Murphy."

No CC. :(

Oh my god, the priest died with no remorse for what he did to them. He actually told his therapist, "There was rampant homosexuality among the older boys. I fixed them." and "It was sex education for them. They were confused about sex." "I never demanded or used force."

The therapist wrote, "Cognitive distortion." She was damn right about that pedophile!

I have been a Catholic all my life since I was a brand new baby. I am not surprised about what happen to children both boys and girls. Almost pretty much all over the North America, we have sexual abuses in our residential schools which molest and abuse children. It was a very hidden that no one knows about being abuse. I wished that they would have been screened just to make sure if they are straight or have experience with being good with children. Also that is why Celibate is not a good idea for many priests and nuns to try to stay true not have any sex with people or children. That is sick when this happen to people especially children from the religious people, even in Cults. I have not gone to the Catholic church in months now. I am ashamed of them. :(
