GLBT Sign Language?

I recently talked with a few of my friends and the subject of GLBT sign language came up. He said that he went to a GLBT meeting and was told that we should chance how we sign gays, lesbians, bis, and transgenders. What's your opinion on this? Is it really worth changing sign language for GLBT?

What do you mean about changing signs for these words? Do you mean like the political correctness of certain signs? Like how some people do not like it when gay is signed as "G" on chin, but rather fingerspelled as G-A-Y? To me, it is really no big deal, and I don't think I would really change it.

Yeah, they prefered the politically correct way of using these sign languages. For gay, you spell it out instead of saying "G" on the chin. For transgendered, you make a motion of an opened hand to closed hand whole rounding your wrist around an imaginary breast. Bi is left alone with a simple "B-I" as it is spelled out. Lesbian is prefered to be spelled out like with gay.

Personally, I don't care how it's signed.

Doesn't that sign for Transgendered sort of infer that all of them are male to female transgenders? I'm surprised that would be their PC sign...there are female to male transgenders too.

It's hard to describe cuz I can't sign it perfectly myself.

Umm...

Instead of closing your hand completely, close it by using the pinky finger first and close the whole hand finger by finger like a domino effect.

That's the best I can describe. I don't really care because I think it's a waste of time making up a bunch of new signs when we should just stick with the old ones.

Something in that is still decidedly female-centric to me...

i agree abt the waste of time making up new signs -- but hell seeing new signs interests me on how ppl signs whatever word -- as for ur 2nd attempt in explaining -- i think i have a general idea but still do not see how it can be a sign for "transgendered" uhmm -- gracias Vampy

for people who changed their sex, I sign "sex" but I use the "x" on top in right way, then I twist the X backwards when I moved it down. Like "changed" whilst signing sex with one hand.

I must be getting quite rusty and forgettable about ASL...

It doesn't bother me -- no need to change anything if it's not too offending and so forth.

That's the sign I like! I'm sorry if it appears offensive to some people but it's the only thing that will make people understand the real meaning.

Now, that's the best description I've ever heard. That's exactly what I'm trying to say.

To me that TRANSGENDER sign doesn't really look like getting the breasts removed, but has a sense of "feeling beautiful inside." That's how I'll remember it anyway, although most likely I'll use the older change-X sign with people who still use it.

I really dont have a personal preference. I can certainly understand how someone might perceive some of the signs as being rather un-pc. But personally, I am not in any manner offended by any of the above signs.

CyberRed... No, this is not old sign for transgender but it has been around for about 3 to 4 years now and it was started by TG (transgender) woman from UK (London) that new sign that gave to Dragosani Riveria - Famous Deaf FTM (female to male) when he was in RAD in Flordia in couple of years ago and the TG woman told Drago that new sign is polite and clean for people to use rather using the old "X" sign that makes people thinks that insulting or dirty word for international wide sign language user for transgender.....And that the old sign which was like using X sign on cheek move down to chin in backward X sign.... let me demostrate you in the pictures that what i am talking about.... For the sign of GLBT is mostly likely use gay "G" on chin, lesbian "L" on chin, Bisexual in fingerspelling "BI", transgender either "X" from cheek to chin (see pic below) or "beautiful in the chest" (see previous pic).... or people sign in fingerspelling "gay", "lesbian", "bi", "transgender" ....like that...

I can't use the older change-X sign because none of my friends, at least the ones from the West Coast, use it. When somebody does use it, I find it disconcerting. Generally, I use the new sign for TRANSGENDER although I "re-open" my dominant hand after I close it. Once I showed it to my friend, a native signer of Taiwanese SL, and he thought it resembled a blossoming flower.
