Depends on the situation
CC is often "funded" by various advertisers (or the broadcasting station) Interpreters are often paid by: doctors offices (NOT the patient/client!!), conference host/sponsor , the educational institution (or school district/division) etc ... it really depends on what the situation is. In the case of doctors, emergency/hospital, accredited educational setting etc the Hoh/Deaf/SI user should NEVER have to pay. Did you have specific situations in mind ? |

Doctors, nurses, police, teachers, fire fighters, Congressmen, the President, and all others who serve the public should work for free, too.

It's important to remember that working for free doesn't always benefit the deaf consumer. It usually means the hearing client benefits by not being required to pay for services . |

SI = Speech Impaired (ie someone who for one reason or another is unable to speak ie mute, or has difficulty speaking)
Doctors are required by law to provide interpreters. I'd recommend that you contact the interpreter agency in your area, or a disability /Hoh/deaf organization etc and ask them who to contact to rectify the issue of the doctor deciding not to supply interpreters. I know that in some cases an official letter from the government is sent to the doctor explaining that they are legally required to provide interpreters for Hoh/Deaf/SI (ie ASL users) and how to do so. They may be fined if they refuse to do so thereafter. PLEASE look into this - not only for yourself, but also for future ASLers who may NOT have the English skills to be able to do pen&paper etc and understand what is being said (could be dangerous!!!) For CC - yes, I've seen short min-commercials saying "CC for this program provided by ......." (name of store, organization, tv company etc). My mum also says that often there are audio-only announcements saying the same thing (CC provided by....) - ironically without being CC'd! |

Thanks Anij.
I can't imagine ASLers person who may not have the english skills, it could be misunderstood. Like you said it could be dangerous. Best way to get interpreters which it would be helpful. |
