Watch almost any online movie or TV episode with CC!

By the end of this post you'll be able to watch thousands of movies and TV shows on line but before I get into that I'm going to take a moment and explain why I'm posting this.

There are quite a few posts here about Internet movies and TV shows with Subtitles or Closed Captioning. I don't know about you but I'm annoyed with the fact that it's so hard, sometimes impossible, for us to be able to enjoy a movie in a theater with Subtitles. So we have no choice but to wait until it comes out on DVD to buy it and the price of the DVD is much higher then it would have cost to see it in a theater.

It was also annoying to see my friends and family able to watch movies and TV shows on line but I can't always enjoy them because they don't have subtitles.

So until they do something about this. If I want to see a movie I'm going to see it how ever I can. Besides, there are legal ways to watch them on line as well. So that aspect is completely up to you.

The programs you'll need:
(These programs are all free and safe. But don't take my word for it. Feel free to search around and read reviews about them. I always check too.)

DIVX Web Player
Most good quality online Movies and TV episodes are DIVX format (Or AVI with DIVX codec). It doesn't matter if you don't know much about video format. Just trust me. You'll need the DIVX Web player to play high quality movies on line.

VLC Player
This is a great video player and it plays just about any online video format. Another great thing about this player is that you can watch the movies while they are download rather then waiting until the entire video is downloaded.

Normally to watch a movie you download with subtitles you have to download the entire file (Sometimes takes hours) then open the file in a video player that supports subtitles. But with the VLC player you don't have to wait until the entire video is downloaded.

IMPORTANT:
It's advisable to download the above video players (DIVX and VLC) before moving to the next step. The reason for this will be clear in a moment.

Sublight - subtitle search utility
This is a great program that allows you to search a number of subtitles sites at once. You can also preview, rank and link subtitles to videos which makes it easier to find matching subtitles. It's kind of like a Subtitles sharing network or a P2P network for subtitles.
TIP: When you install the Sublight select the "VLC player" as the default player. Also check only the language you'll want to find subtitles in (English in my case). These settings can be changed at any time though).

Now let's walk through it!
Fallow the below steps and you'll be watching a movie with subtitles in no time. I'll assume you've downloaded and installed all the of the above programs.

Just as an example we're going to watch the movie "Grease" with subtitles. Don't worry if you don't want to see this movie. I just want to walk you through it. The same process is used with any internet video.

OK, here's a link to the movie Grease. This is a DIVX movie so you'll need the above player.
  1. Go to this link:
VReel - The Home of DivX HD - Grease
  2. Enter the Captcha (If they ask for it)
  3. On the next page you'll see the video. Push play to start the video (It'll probably start to buffer and will take a few minutes to start playing. But as long as it says "Buffering" then it's loading.
  4. Open the Sublight Program.
  5. Type in "grease" in the Criteria for Manual Search box.
  6. Now click "Suggest" (Sometimes you have to click it twice)
This will search for names or movies that are similar to what you've typed. In this case you should select "Grease (1978)
  7. Now click "Search".
The program will search a number of sites for subtitles that match what you are looking for.

You should end up with a number of subtitles files the program found that match your movie. That does not mean they all match your video though. For example there are many "Grease" videos on line. Some are different then others so you need to find subtitles that match your particular video. Don't worry though. This Sublight program makes it easy to test them out. If one subtitles file doesn't match your video then just try another one.

Now, in the sublight program at the top you'll see a Criteria for Auto Search box. In this box you want to load the path to the video.

The video will be found in:
C:\Users\YOUR USER NAME\Videos\DivX Movies\Temporary Downloaded Files

Be sure to change "Your User Name" to the name of your computer user.

Quote:
If you have a hard time finding your Temporary Downloaded File folder. Here's another way to find it.
  • Go back to your video that's loading the movie (Grease in this case).
  • Right Click on the video and select "Preferences".
  • Click the "Download Cache" Tab.
  • Click "Open Cache folder" button.
  • Your temporary Downloaded Files folder will open. This is where you movie file will be found.
The video will end with the extension (.part). For example movie.divx.part. So if you don't see it in the Temporary Download Files make sure the you're able to see "All files" in that folder.

Ok, now we have the path to the video in the top box in the Sublight program and below are a bunch of subtitles files the program found for the movie grease. Here's how to test and watch them.

Simple double click on one of the Subtitles files. The video will open in the VLC player and the video will play with subtitles. Watch the video for a few minutes to see if they match your movie. If they match then just enjoy the movie.

If the subtitles don't match the movie. Simply close the VLC player and double click on another of the subtitles files.

Repeat the above until you find one that matches and enjoy your movie.

That's all there is to it. Use this same process with any internet video.

Now, I realize that this is a long post and might seem confusing at first. But it really isn't. I just wanted to give you as much detail as I can above.

Here's a simplified explanation of everything I just went over.
  1. Download the 3 programs
  2. Find the movie you want to watch and get it loading.
  3. Search for the subtitles with Sublight.
  4. Enter the path to your video in Sublight.
  5. Double click the Subtitles to test them to see if they match your video.
  6. When you find the ones that match. Enjoy the video with subtitles.

Let me know if you have any questions. I hope someone finds this useful.

Just thought I'd add this Screen shot. This is the Sublight and the VLC player working together. On the left you see all the subtitles files Sublight found. ON the right the VCL player is playing the video with subtitles. Enjoy!

Anyone having any problems with these instructions? I just hope I was able to explain everything well enough to make it easy to fallow. Let me know if any of you have any questions.

BTW - I just watched the newest Harry Potter and it was a big let down. Too many changes and key moments from the book are missing that should be there.

I'm glad it's working for you. Use them for a while and it'll get even easier.

BTW - A good site to find movies and TV episodes is http://ipb.quicksilverscreen.com/index.php

Join that forum and look in the "DIVX" section. They have great selections and the people are nice and helpful.

I pushed and pushed them and they even created a section on English Subtitled movies there.

Now about the Harry Potter. If you've read all the books then you'll know that this last movie (6) made many mistakes. For example where the Potions book was hidden. It does not match the final book. Also, what happened to the best part of book 6? Where is the great battle? That's one part I really looked forward to seeing in the movie but they excluded it. Bummer.

I just made this video to show the steps you can take when using Sublight and VLC player.

Yes, some subtitles will be better then others. Especially on new release movies. Sometimes all you can find is subtitles in other language and they use a translator to convert them to English. The results of this are usually very bad subtitles.

But if you wait a little while (usually with in a week or so) someone out there will usually make some good subtitles and post them. So if it's a new movie and the English subtitles are terrible. Keep checking back every day or two to see if good ones have been made yet. I had to do this for about 5 days with the Harry Potter movie but then some good ones finally came.

What is the best movies website to download to use this Sublight program? It would be nice to download fast speed than using torrent files that takes so many hours to download movies/tv shows.

Here's the best site for finding movies and TV shows. I say they're the best because they have the best selection and more importantly the people there are nice and helpful.

Here are some tips for using their forum.

For the best quality (DivX) movies and TV shows look in the "DIVX" section.

I recommend using forefox because you can install the "Download Helper Add-on". It's free and works great.

Here's one way to use it. Open a page that has a streaming video (Such as a youtube, divx and hundreds of other sites). When there's a video embedded on a page you just click the download helper icon and click the video link and it'll start to download. It's that easy.

If you want to watch a megavideo movie. Their player has a time limit unless you pay for the full movie. In other words you can't watch the entire video unless you pay megavideo to watch it all. With the download helper you don't have to pay megavideo. All you do is download the video with download helper rather then watching it on the page. Just start the video. Click the download helper and start it downloading. Then close the page the video is streaming on.

Then use the info I poster above in this discussion to watch it with subtitles.

I know my long opening post on this discussion might seem confusing but it really isn't. Let me give a simplified explanation.
  1. Get a video loading on a page (Or start downloading it). In either case the video is loading.
  2. Open sublight and search for the subtitles for your movie.
  3. Load the path to the video that's loading into the top of sublight.
  4. Double click on a subtitles file that sublight found. The video will start playing in the VLC Player.
  5. If the subtitles match then you're done. Just watch the video with subtitles.
  6. If the subtitles dont' match your video. Just close the VCL player and try another subtitles file.

Watch the video I made a few posts up. You'll see that it's really not as hard as it might seem at first. Do it a few times and you'll get the hang of it. Sure beats spending hours searching for those subs.
