I haven't had cable in years. I moved out to the country 16 years ago and there was no cable available. No satellite either. Had to use just the rabbit ears and get only local. We now have directv, and I love it. As you said, captioning is fairly good and I don't lose my signal that often. But, the one thing I Do miss with cable is the ability to watch one show, record another, and, if I chose record many more...all from one box. I have two dvr machines, plus a regular, older machine, which is hooked up to a dvd recorder, but I pay for each machine each month.

nah i like IPTV better cuz it is new high tech stuff through fiber optics. it is much cheaper than cable. what i have at home is AT&T Uverse - Internet Protocol TV - it runs CC pretty good... My DVR can run up to 4 tv programs at same time. soon we will have WHDVR, whole house DVR which means when you dont want to stay in living room that has DVR and you want to rest in bed, you can watch a recorded tv program streaming in your bedroom from living room's DVR. pretty cool eh ?
i feel SO GOOD that i am no longer Comcastic slave ! IPTV - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I want to share my experience with satellite TV and digital cable that I used. When the heavy thunderstorm with lightning or snowstorm happened, the signals from my satellite TV dish became choppy and/or scrambled for several minutes. Several years later I switched to HDTV-ready digital cable terminal due to my new HDTV, the interference from thunderstorm and lightning did not cause a lot of scramble on screen.
Now I am satisfied with my digital cable terminal.

I'd love to have IPTV, but I don't watch TV anymore. But if I would like to watch TV, it'll be locals only, but then I don't watch locals a lot.
I do have Winegard SharpShooter SS-3000 Antenna, but I'm having trouble picking up ABC and NBC. CBS is not a problem, but I've gotta aim my antenna up high and aim it perfectly to get CBS. I live in a first floor apartment. I haven't been watching news (ABC 27 HD is my favorite in Tallahassee) every morning since I got up late mostly everyday, but I could care less about the morning news since I'm hearing impaired and I can't keep up with closed caption. Oh, and I've been wanting to get rid of Comcast High Speed Internet and switch to DSL. Since I stopped watching TV altogether, what's the point of keeping cable TV service for $10 a month with $42.95 a month for High Speed Internet? Well, without it, I'll be paying $60 for High Speed Internet only. Too expensive for me. I'm fine with 6Mbps download speed, so why do I need a download speed of 12Mbps? But when it comes to DSL, upload speed (384 kbps is the minimum, but 512kbps is even better) is more important than download speed (even though 3Mbps is the minimum but 6Mbps is even better). That way, I can be free of Comcastic slave, too!

Satellite TV for me, Directv by miles.
There's no fiber optic in my area, only DSL and cable internet are offers since DSL is max at 3 mbps due DSLAM limitation and max at 16 mbps for comcast. For weather, I had been watch tv during heavily rain or bad storm, it still work fine on mine, only outage issue is happen when windy is very heavier or very heavier snow.

Ahhhhh! Satellite and Cable have list of positive and negative. Which you have to write down and compare it. It depend on local you live such as country or City and the cost or offer. Yes we demand a good (CC) to enjoy our entertainment.

I like better is CableTV, FIOS for safe
Satellite is NO GOOD!! 1) Storm, bad picture / blurry 2) if house is bautiful, but dish on roof, look not beautiful 3) Risk Lightning hit Dish, will damage HDTV/DVR if they forget ground? 4) high windy will hit dish fall 5) dish is dirty, you must cleanup it every time 6) who will stole dish 7) small Asteroid or fire rain hit Satellite and blow!, no longer watch TV! Satellite is only one TV alone CableTV and FIOS are Multi (phone, internet, TV, VOD, Music, future more more) I like CableTV or FIOS better!

I'm Directv user for 2 years and got proud of it, bold in statement that isn't true. I don't have any issues with quality during bad storm, only got very bad during heavy snowstorm or blizzard, that's not happen so often and recovery will be issued after that without need for repair, I never clean satellite and quality looks great. You said who stole? there's someone who damage the cable, make no difference, there's no fire rain or asteroid then you should talk like myth. Only for 1 TV set? Not true, Directv support 5 TV, we are connected Directv to 5 TV at same bills, unlike digital cable that require additional bill for additional tv. Directv offers 100% digital picture since landline cable (analog cable) isn't 100% digital picture.

I do have 2 receivers, one in the living room and one in my office room... if i need to tape something, like a tv show while I watching hockey game at the same time I can tape that in the living room and also watch the game on my tv in the office... simple enough...

I have satellite dish for over 7 years and not even one problem with DirecTV.
Who says dish must be clean often? I have not clean dish for over 7 years! in the last 7 years the price for package increased only ONCE, with cute 2 dollars increase, comparing to Time Warner cable whose always increase rate every year!!! Somebody complaining that dish will quit working during storm, sure it happens but very rare! Moving? Sure three times in the past 7 years and I have not paid diconnection and reconnection fees comparing to Time warner, you move? You must pay fee for disconnect and reconnect at new location. Who says DTV not available to some areas? DTV actually available to anywhere even if at Death Valley still available! The only thing that may not be available is local channel if one local area station refused to agree with DirecTV deal. Meaning no local channel for certain areas that is all. My area have local TV channel available on DirecTV. I will NEVER go back t Cable TV! "UP yours" to greedy, lying Time Warner!!! Yes, Time Warner lies alot, and my state Attorney General busted Time Warner for not keeping their word or promises. For example, Time Warner have a promotion $29.95 a month for one year, trust me, they will sneak and try to make it shorter without you notice, I busted them three times raising price before one year promotion ends. This TURNS ME OFF big time. Trust Time Warner? NEVER! |

Mostly normal storm dont cause any problem. Only bad storm like very heavy rain. House still need use cable as it looks ugly for between from house to pole. Dish looks cool as high-tech "wireless" All dish have build-in ground. Few weeks ago I got almost 80mph windy and dish still stand. Dish is windproof. My parents own Directv for 12 years and never clean. Pictures still clear. Who carry the ladder for steal the dish? ![]() Asteroid or fire rain still kill your cable. They are very rare. I never heard of that. Dish is best than cable for anywhere. You can watch dish during you are on roadtrip.

People can steal cable stuff, such as digital cable receiver when break in home, plus people can damage the cable cord and that cause neighbors to unable to receive cable until repaired, remember, if car hit cable pole then cable is outage, same with lightning.
