Deaf and Hoh need to have a CLOSED-CAPTIONED available!

I have an idea about CC need available at internet like youtube, News video, dvd movie. I am trying to look for CC available on pc DVD movie. They don't have any CC available. Why can't we have CC on News video, youtube, dvd movie and 5min??? Hearing people have no idea why deaf people don't speak during video. Hearing people are confuse and not understand and need to hear the voice. I offer for hearing people who don't know sign language and have to read the CC for deaf's story.

Why not we make a LAW for all CC must available in everywhere. It's very important! It's same with interpreter.

Do you have any idea??

For commercial websites like CNN, they should be pressured into captioning their video contents.

But YouTube? That's not the same thing.

I totally agree with You Tube having CC or subtitles,,,also,,,with the ones that are ASL,,, because like myself, I am HOH and trying so hard to learn ASL and at times I can not socialize (to practice sign) cuz my deaf friends are busy,,, so I surf online trying to learn more ASL through videos or blogs....... or they can at least put the info. of the video to the side so people can pick up sign and understand what the videos are saying. I know its time consuming...but maybe just write to the side what is being said?

Youtube for hearing people and need to add CC for deaf people to watch this vlog. If deaf people do use ASL on vlog. It will be no problem.

I agree with you Bangjo. All CNN, Headline CNN and other News LIVE need to add CC. I am tired of NEWS with LIVE always get off the CC while speech. I can't understand them. But Fox news do have CC available.

If your deaf friends are busy. You can try to chat with deaf people on Videophone. It will help you to understand the word in ASL. You can surf for ASL video at internet. It will help you understand. Do you use closed-captioned for tv and dvd movie on pc??

I forget to say 1 more thing. When I was planning to watch a movie DVD on my pc or macbook. It's working so great but not show up the CC on it. I tried to look for setting up or menu. It's nothing at all. I need the CC for my pc and macbook on dvd movie and recording.

Know what else sucks? Education videostreaming (such as United Videostreaming) that we teachers use for school. Some are captioned (not all, grrr) BUT the ones that are captioned, you can't pull up the full screen - the caption won't work. It will only work if you have the small screen, which is distracting because the student can see the other parts of the computer screen (such as the tool bar, list of videos, etc.) GRRRRR!!!!!!!!!

What we need is a special software that actual do the translator when read the voice and turn into text. Unfortunately, everybody's tone are difficult to read.

You're right. There are some voice-to-text software programs out there, but they are known for their innaccuracies due to variances in voice tone and pronunciation.

Unfortunately, have patience. While I can't speak for all forms of media (CNN, YouTube, etc.), remember back in the 80's when CC first came out, very FEW shows were captioned, and look at how much is captioned today. Give it time, closed captioning will get better. In the meantime, I get frustrated too, you are not alone.

CC on NBC.com

I am new to hearing loss, but I have been doing a lot of surfing and googling. As far as online streaming video, NBC.com is the only one I know of that offers CC (takes adjusting to, as the CC is not on screen but in a box to the right of the video). But, it is a step in the right direction.

I forgot to mention that there are subtitle files available for a lot of shows (and movies) on the internet. I know that if I miss a certain episode of a network show that I can download it and find the matching sub file (.srt file extension). I can then play it on my computer and see subs if I have both files named the same and in the same location. There are also sites that offer txt transcripts of tv shows and movies and programs that let you make your own sub files. I am still working on that as I had to replace my graphics card, sigh....
As time goes by, I find I can't live without CC or subs....so, I will work with that.

The same goes for some DVDs.

If there's a DVD you want to watch, but it doesn't have subtitles or captions... you can look for it online and import it on your computer when playing your DVD.

I don't think that will ever happen as it would cost billions and billions of dollars every year. You can't just caption something by having some piece of software do it all for you, or at least, not accurately. Speech to text software is very inaccurate.

Join NAD. They just discussed about the issue of internet streaming and all kinds of technologies.

Become NAD member, you will be able to voice more and work with them as when they need petitions or other side of stories. Or report a website that is not closed caption.
