Closed captions on component video

I have need of hooking a DVD player up to an HDTV, preferably LCD. My current set can't decode captions over component. (I know it's the TV, according to the manual and the fact that this DVD player and cable set works fine on component on my old CRT).

If you have a DVD player connected to a set via component, try to turn on closed captions. If they show, please let me know the make and model of TV/tuner you are using. I'd prefer something 32" or larger, but smaller is OK if necessary.

Your DVD player is probably set to "progressive" scan from the factory. Typically you cannot see Closed Caption if DVD player component out is set to progressive scan. Try change it to "interlaced" scan via menu setup and Closed Caption hopefully will work.

What brand and model # entertainment equipment (TV and DVD player) do you have? I saw a operating manual for new Mitsubishi LCD TVs and they do not support CC using component. Your TV may not be the only one not supporting CC using component.

Does you see CC menu on display like said "CC ON" or "CC OFF" on screen?

If no then your TV don't support CC via component cable.

If yes then take peternagy's suggest to disable on progessive scan.

well...component cables will not work with captioning via DVD to a HDTV no matter if it's progressive scan or not. I've done this before and nothing at all works with component cables....but I heard some people on this site said a few successfully got it working thru component cables, I believe they're newer version of HDTVs anyhow.

Before you buy a TV, either download TV's operating manual from TV's web site or ask a sales person to get you one to make sure CC is supported via component cable. Sony TV's support CC vis component only if DVD player component out is set to interlace scan (non-progressive scan). It appears today's Mitsubishi LCD TVs do not support CC via component whether it uses interlace or progressive scan according to their operating manual.
