Hi
I am a hearing student at SUNY Ulster in NY State. I'm taking a class called "Intro to Deaf Culture"
I took the class because I would like to know more about the Deaf world. I havn't taken an ASL class yet, but know a few signs. I plan on taking ASL before I finish. :fingersx: I feel that we need to educate the Hearing about the Deaf so that they have a better understanding of how to treat and communicate with the Deaf. I will be giving a presentation about Deaf experiences. Would anyone like to talk about their personal experiences? It would be highly appreciated.:ty:

Well, being deaf is hard for me since with my hearing family. I have a hard time communicating with my family. Since my mom don't understand about deaf and hard-of-hearing. When I sign with my friends out in the public, hearing people look at us like we are crazy or something. Being out in the public is hard because of other people look at us like we are rude when we sign and communication is the problem...My family don't know signs and my mom knows a little signs. It is still hard to understand her and she thinks that I know what she said..That was not fair!! Right now, I feel like that my family is abandoning me because of my deafness. I am please about what you are doing about giving presentations to the hearing about the deaf. I think it is the right thing to do and let them learn about our culture...

Hi Dressagelover
Thank you for your response. I can't imagine not being able to communicate
with your family. I'm so sorry they don't understand, people including
families really need to become more aware of how you feel. I think that ASL
should be a required subject learned in every public school in the US.
Please keep your head up and do the best you can.

I am the parent of a daughter who has been deaf since birth. She is 12 years old but has only had hearing aids for 9 years. We are preparing for a CI at the end of April. I am a self taught signer but know little conversational sign, I help teach a basic sign language at my daughter's school.
My daughter has farily good speech and uses her sign language mostly at school. However, she has now decided that she would rather not use it at all. I have stressed the importance of her keeping her signing skills up and to use it more because all of her assignments at school are signed to her by her interpreters. I am also amazed by the people I see using sign in public. I think it one of the most beautiful things and I am just in awe.
She hasn't attended any deaf culture functions, but I am hoping to send her to deaf camp this year. I believe she will enjoy it immensely. I'd like to go myself, but can't due to work restraints. :(
I support you fully in your efforts to educate the hearing people about deaf culture and all it can offer to the hearing people in the world.

To Gamber

Hi,
I think you're absolutely right about encouraging your daughter to continue to sign. Does she realize that she will need it when she gets her CI? I think sign is beautiful, and I will be starting my sign classes in the fall. I'm working towards my Sign Language Interpreters Certificate as well as my AA degree. Tell your daughter that "sign rules"
