Today I saw a doctor (second time) and started antibiotics for pneumonia. The doctor thinks I have atypical pneumonia. I never knew about "atypical pneumonia" before and don't care to know = weird because I like to learn about anything. Now I don't. I just want antibiotics work. He also took blood to test, but the test takes 4-6 weeks! :eek3: I don't have a fever, but I cough all day and night. Three times I ate ice cream because of a sore throat and then cough and then puke the ice cream on the floor.

For the first 3 days this week I attended class. But last night I felt so bad again I cancelled with interpretors and professors. This semester I miss so much class and don't study because I feel bad. I dropped one class and this summer will take class with work in the lab. Even with one less class I don't know if I will pass all classes with so much sick time.

Ok. Need a positive thought because my blog is all negatives.............With feeling bad, I know my parents and friends are *great*. They are the best, so I am lucky. And I have great dogs. When I was sleeping on my parents sofa because I felt so bad, our Rhodesian Ridgeback acted like a guard dog - sitting by the sofa all day. And our Great Dane cleaned up the puke ice cream before I could. :laugh2:

Sorry to anyone for the negative blog post. It is a stupid way to spend my little internet time. :ugh3:

School is terrible. I am better, but still no energy, and cough and sore throat. I missed so much class and now behind in class. I don't know if I can catch up. I know I do some work slow (papers etc). All my classes I need so much time. I don't have easy classes like math and physics. It's hard even paying attention in class because I am behind with reading and if I cough or sneeze I miss something. I have class notes, but that's more reading. :pissed: Probably I need to just focus on school 100% for a month or so. I hope.

Today I feel better. Not great. I cough but less. My throat hurts but not so bad. Tonight is the first night I am sleeping at my apartment (I have stopped by my apartment almost every day to check mail etc). It is nice to be back, but I miss my parents and my dogs - my dogs slept on the sofa with me.

I am in trouble with school. I missed almost 2 weeks. Maybe for some this is not such a big problem, but for me this is a huge problem. I want to meet all my professors tomorrow or Monday to talk about missed lecture and work. I don't know how I will make up everything. One thing I know - less fun. Less fun with friends and less fun online. And probably a class in the summer with my lab work (one credit because it is science and I write a paper). :(

Still sick. Yesterday night I felt a little better so I thought I would be ok today. But today I feel worse again. I am going to my parents house to sleep again. My dad wants me to see a doctor (not him - he is a surgeon) on Monday if I am not better. I hope I am better tomorrow. Long week. :(

_________ Of The Day, Triathalons

From Dictionary.Com - Word of the Day: raillery (http://dictionary.reference.com/wordoftheday/) \RAY-luh-ree\, noun:
1. Good-humored banter or teasing.
2. An instance of good-humored teasing; a jest.

I moved from one knot of people to another, surrounded by a kind of envious respect because of Sophie's interest in me, although subjected to a certain mordant raillery from some of this witty company.
-- Peter Brooks, World Elsewhere

Her raillery and mockery are fun -- but ultimately rather tiring, and tiresome.
-- Barbara Grizzuti Harrison, "Eastward Ho!" review of Shards of Memory, by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, New York Times, September 17, 1995

Raillery is from French raillerie, from Old French railler, "to tease, to mock."

I never saw this word. I wonder if anyone says this.

........

From PEAK English - Slang of the day: jumpy (http://www.peakenglish.com/slang/dailySlang.jsp)
Definition: Nervous or apprehensive; afraid that something bad will happen.

Example: 1) I'm always a little bit jumpy when I walk by the graveyard at night.

2) Rachel sure is jumpy today. I said 'hello' and she nearly hit the ceiling!

Etymology: To 'jump' means to move into the air by springing or leaping up, so someone who is 'jumpy' is on the edge of leaping into the air in surprise or fear.

Synonyms: jittery

Good word.

..........

From Grammar Tip of the Day: Pesky Plurals of Proper Nouns (http://gtotd.blogspot.com/)

from Ruge Rules

The Rule: To form the plural of a proper noun (regardless of what letter it ends in), simply add s or es.

Never form the plural by adding an apostrophe and then an s.

So: Let's take a family named Hardy.

Wrong: The Hardies are having a party.
Wrong: The Hardy's are having a party.
Right: The Hardys are having a party
Right: The Hardys' house is the last one on the right. (Note the possessive plural of Hardy.)

Or: a family named Jones.

Wrong: The Jones's are having a party.
Right: The Joneses are having a party
Right: The Joneses' house is the last one on the right. (Note the possessive plural of Jones.)

I didn't know this.

..............

I am tired. Last night we had a triathalon. Not running, biking, and swimming - Twister, darts, and pool. I hoped to win. I am great at Twister because I am very flexible and can do back walkovers etc. I'm ok at darts - I am still learning and good at pool. But I didn't win (we gave a little prize to the winner). I did have a lot of fun.

I like doing these things with friends. Twister, darts, pool etc is easier because everyone is doing so less discussion. I know I miss conversation anyway - I am ok with lipreading but not upside down with Twister! :laugh2: - but everyone focuses on activity. And everyone has a great time.

We try to hold triatholons a couple of times a semester. Any 3 activities - bowling (I am terrible), card games - anything. One time we had handstand contest for a traitholon in our apartment, but some women won't try this with guys here :dunno2:. And some guys were too wild with walking around on the hands and then falling everywhere in the apartment. Once we had push-up contest also, separate for men and women. But my roommate refuses to repeat because she couldn't do 10 and I won with many more. :h5:

I hope everyone is having a fun weekend. :)

Word, Slang, Grammar, Running

From Dictionary.Com: Word of the day (http://dictionary.reference.com/wordoftheday/): *mimetic* \mim-ET-ik\, adjective:
1. Apt to imitate; given to mimicry; imitative.
2. Characterized by mimicry; -- applied to animals and plants; as, "mimetic species; mimetic organisms."

As a young man, Charles Dickens dreamed of becoming a great actor, and though he never realized that ambition, he put his mimetic genius to good use in his novels.

Mimetic comes from Greek mimetikos, from mimesis, "imitation," from mimos, a kind of drama; also, "an imitator, a copyist, an actor." Related words include mimic and mime.

I didn't know "mimetic". I thought the word was "imicry" or something. I'm still not sure about meaning and use of "mimetic" - probably need to think about it more.

...........

From Peak English: Slang of the Day (http://www.peakenglish.com/slang/dailySlang.jsp): *axe*
Definition: To eliminate someone from their job; to terminate employment.
Example: 1) My old company axed me after they found out I had been sleeping on the job.
Synonyms: downsize, get fired, pink slip

Definition: An electric guitar.
Example: 1) The legendary Jimi Hendrix used to play his axe behind his back.

Easier webpage to understand than the other. I didn't know about axe=guitar, but maybe I knew about ace = get fired. (Didn't know "pink slip" either! I wonder why getting fired is "pink slip"?)

...........

From Grammar Tip of the Day (http://gtotd.blogspot.com/2008/01/very-unique-please-kill-me-now.html): *"Very unique" -- please kill me now*

The Rule: Choose words that are exact, idiomatic and fresh.

When we write and speak, we must be aware of what words mean. The word "unique" comes from the Latin word "unus," meaning one. E pluribus unum means "out of many, one."

Unique means "being the only one, being without like or equal." A person or thing is either unique or not. You can't be "very unique." You hear it all the time, but this expression doesn't reflect the uniqueness of the word unique.

Another commonly cited word like this is "pregnant." A woman is either pregnant or she is not. She can't be "very pregnant." She can certainly be very far along in her pregnancy, but not "very pregnant."

Interesting (maybe only to me ). Before sometimes I write "very unique". :nono:

...............

Two days ago I ran too far. I don't know how far, but maybe 16-17 miles? I went with my friend and every time one wants to stop the other said "go" so we continue running. Then we realize we have to go back to the car and this means we have to double the distance we run. My back hurt so bad for 2 days. I couldn't lift anything or turn much. I take Alleve and it is better but still sore. But we had so much fun.

I like running in the cold. When you start you are cold and stiff. Everything is cold for the first mile. Then you are warm in your chest. Your nose and face are freezing, but your chest is warm. You run more and you make a lot of heat. Every stride is more heat. Your nose is still cold and ears and face, but you are warm, maybe hot. Like a furnace making heat every stride down the road in the snow.

Big talk and Happy New Year's!

Last night before my parent's New Year's Eve party we talked about HAs and CIs. For months I know they realize I stopped wearing HAs. Always in the past when I stopped wearing HAs (when I was a kid), my parents say I must wear them and are unhappy with me. But they don't say anything. This is weird to me, but I was grateful they don't.

So last night my mom said the music for the party probably will make problems with HAs. Then she stopped and said she forgot I stopped wearing HAs. She didn't say to wear them or was unhappy. I was so surprised. So I asked her why she isn't unhappy about this. She said she knew this year my hearing is worse and worse. She noticed with HAs I can't follow conversation - just lipread so not so great. She said this summer she saw I didn't hear our big Great Dane bark in the yard with my HAs etc. So she and my dad decide that if power HAs don't work, probably HAs are done for me.

Then she surprised me more - she said also they decide HAs or not is my decision and when to see the audiologist is my decision. In the past HAs never is my decision. Summer school etc never is my decision. I was amazed.

I told her about even with HAs and even in my better ear I don't hear enough for conversation. Even most loud noises is nothing. And tinnitus is a huge problem that before I never have really. Last she knows my audiologist appointment is February and last appointment we talk about CIs. I told her now I don't want CI - I am not comfortable about surgery with school and doubt much benefit for me at 21. But maybe later.

My dad joined us. He is great, but he has opinion of everything and sometimes with no facts. Also with medical stuff sometimes he is pushy (he is a surgeon) or too strong with opinions. He talked about how great CI is and the surgery is nothing big. I said "stop". Never, never do I say to my dad "stop". But CI is my decision - my skull, my hearing, my life. And I research CI more.

He stopped. I can't believe this. Then he apologized when I told him for months I do research and I am not ignorant about CI. I almost die with surprise.

At the end of the conversation we all cried because for too long we don't talk about these important points.

Last night was so much fun. I went to a party with my female roommate and my BF. It was a swimsuit party, so I and my BF wore swimsuits but my roommate didn't. Part was really wild - probably too much, but later just me and my friend in the hottub alone and this was so relaxing so I am glad we had swimsuits. I closed my eyes and didn't have any thought or conversation - just relaxed even with crazy stuff upstairs in the house. All day I had a headache and tinnitus drives me crazy, but then just hot water and bubbles - so nice. I wish for more days like this.

Also I won a prize - six very nice beer glasses - a funny prize I think. The brothers who have the party are wild and sometimes trouble, but they are very nice to me and have a great party.

One problem - today I have no energy and a headache like :rl:. No running for me. Just a nap, so the opposite of running I guess.

Tomorrow night my parents have a party. But this will not be wild or crazy. Probably a good thing. :P

Almost Happy New Year's!

I love New Year's. Every year near New Year's brothers who live near my parents have a HUGE party. They buy all the food and drinks and also give nice door prizes.

The party is a "beach party" in the house. If you wear a bikini (women) or a small swimsuit (guys) you get a door prize and a raffle ticket and you don't pay. If you wear a shirt you don't get a prize and pay $1. If you wear pants or if guys wear a board shorts - no prize and $1. So if you wear a shirt and pants/board shorts you pay $2. Around midnight they give with the raffle one really nice prize. Last year they gave the iTunes Shuffle. The party is a little wild because the parents are on vacation and the brothers are crazy.

The party is Saturday. I am going with my friend and my roommate. My roommate won't wear a bikini because she is uncomfortable so no prize for her! Too bad because the house has a giant wilrpool (sorry - too lazy to check spelling) but she makes my odds of winning better. :P We should have a great time.

On New Year's Eve my parents have a big party but not so wild. They hire people for the food and drink and invite so many people. Everyone has a good time.

Another party is in a nice hotel. They give you a good dinner, party hats etc. But most is dancing with a band like older people (I don't know the word or other way to describe this). My friend thinks about us going, but I don't think there is any fun for me. At the crazy brother's house they play the music so loud so I like it (last year the police didn't :eek3:) but the hotel band probably is too quiet. Seems boring to me anyways. Probably we go to my parents for a while and then leave.

Hope everyone has a fun New Year's!

So awful

I met the family of a friend. This was a big deal. I am friendly with everyone (almost) and get along with everyone (almost) so I wasn't worried. At first we had no problem. Then he left to go outside and I was with his mom alone. She asked me a lot of questions.

I used pen and paper with a little pad so I still have the questions. Some: "Can you hear anything?" "Is anyone else in your family deaf?" "Is it genetic?" "Don't you want a cochlear implant?" (she spelled CI wrong - usually I don't care about spelling because my spelling is not good but ) "Are most of your friends deaf?" "What will you do after you graduate? Do you want to work?" "What do deaf people do in emergencies?" (I didn't understand the question so she explained about not hearing a problem, using the phone (she didn't know about relay) for 911 etc) "Did he give your those earrings? They are very nice" and questions about dating I won't repeat because I don't want to talk about dating online really.

Then her sister and mother (aunt and grandmother of my friend) joined us. The grandmother grabbed my arm to put my ear near her and yelled something. I didn't understand her and pulled away. She just smiled. Then she kept talking but with exaggerating mouth movements. No idea what she said. Then my friend's mom and his aunt talked to each other about me I think but I understood nothing while his grandmother keeps mouthing at me. I wanted to run.

My friend's brother came and saw all these and said something to the mother, aunt, and grandmother. Then he asked me to join him. We went outside to my friend and his brother explained. My friend was very mad and wanted to leave. I said we must stay because of his family. But the rest was awful.

So awful. He feels terrible and also his brother and dad. Maybe I am naive about all this. He learned ASL/PSE in college and more in med school because he was interested and knew he wanted med school so ASL is good for future deaf patients. His PSE is not great but he has a great attitude about learning everything and learns *so* fast.

I guess before I meet them I think his parents must have similar thinking about deaf/HoH. Maybe his dad but his mom.......she thinks I am not good enough for him I think. She is wrong I know, but maybe she is too much against me. I don't think about changing people. If you accept me, fine. If not, your problem and not mine. Usually, no problem because most people are very friendly to me. But.........and she is his mom.

Enough. Soon we are going for a looooooong hard run so I will try to run him in the ground. Then we will talk maybe. Or not for now.

Community and fights

The internet is weird. In the history of the internet has anyone read a post on a hot topic and changed their mind - boom! - because of the one post? Probably not, even with the billions? trillions? of posts. Maybe over time people change their idea a bit but not because of one post.

So probably forum fighting is useless, right? But every forum has big fights over these topics - abortion, religion, CI, oral-only etc. These make posts more interesting I believe 100% but sometimes the fighting and rude posts is just too much.

I hope people who are in these big forum fights post in other areas without fighting so they are part of a community and not just fighting. Join the community and post more than arguements or stop posting IMO. If you just post in the hot topic threads it is too easy to make a snarky, rude, or mean post. It is harder when you wish the person a happy birthday or talk about your pets or play a game with someone.

But maybe some don't want a community - they just want to be "right".

Announcement: None are ever declared "right". None will read your post and change minds 100%. People can reach their computer and turn off you. Rude posts only make you look bad. And in months all the internet arguements are forgotten by all. None wins. None loses. A lot look bad. So post a "happy birthday" or funny story and join the community and maybe even have some fun.

I have some muscle relaxer medication from my sports med doctor, but I feel weird with them so I don't use them Also my dad and I planned on looking at keyboards for my broken keyboard (no "g" so I cut and paste) but the weather is too bad. I need to move to Florida. :cold:
