From Dictionary.Com - Word of the Day: raillery \RAY-luh-ree\, noun:
1. Good-humored banter or teasing.
2. An instance of good-humored teasing; a jest.
I moved from one knot of people to another, surrounded by a kind of envious respect because of Sophie's interest in me, although subjected to a certain mordant raillery from some of this witty company.
-- Peter Brooks, World Elsewhere
Her raillery and mockery are fun -- but ultimately rather tiring, and tiresome.
-- Barbara Grizzuti Harrison, "Eastward Ho!" review of Shards of Memory, by Ruth Prawer Jhabvala, New York Times, September 17, 1995
Raillery is from French raillerie, from Old French railler, "to tease, to mock."
I never saw this word. I wonder if anyone says this.
........
From PEAK English - Slang of the day: jumpy
Definition: Nervous or apprehensive; afraid that something bad will happen.
Example: 1) I'm always a little bit jumpy when I walk by the graveyard at night.
2) Rachel sure is jumpy today. I said 'hello' and she nearly hit the ceiling!
Etymology: To 'jump' means to move into the air by springing or leaping up, so someone who is 'jumpy' is on the edge of leaping into the air in surprise or fear.
Synonyms: jittery
Good word.
..........
From Grammar Tip of the Day: Pesky Plurals of Proper Nouns
from Ruge Rules
The Rule: To form the plural of a proper noun (regardless of what letter it ends in), simply add s or es.
Never form the plural by adding an apostrophe and then an s.
So: Let's take a family named Hardy.
Wrong: The Hardies are having a party.
Wrong: The Hardy's are having a party.
Right: The Hardys are having a party
Right: The Hardys' house is the last one on the right. (Note the possessive plural of Hardy.)
Or: a family named Jones.
Wrong: The Jones's are having a party.
Right: The Joneses are having a party
Right: The Joneses' house is the last one on the right. (Note the possessive plural of Jones.)
I didn't know this.
..............
I am tired. Last night we had a triathalon. Not running, biking, and swimming - Twister, darts, and pool. I hoped to win. I am great at Twister because I am very flexible and can do back walkovers etc. I'm ok at darts - I am still learning and good at pool. But I didn't win (we gave a little prize to the winner). I did have a lot of fun.
I like doing these things with friends. Twister, darts, pool etc is easier because everyone is doing so less discussion. I know I miss conversation anyway - I am ok with lipreading but not upside down with Twister!
- but everyone focuses on activity. And everyone has a great time.
We try to hold triatholons a couple of times a semester. Any 3 activities - bowling (I am terrible), card games - anything. One time we had handstand contest for a traitholon in our apartment, but some women won't try this with guys here
. And some guys were too wild with walking around on the hands and then falling everywhere in the apartment. Once we had push-up contest also, separate for men and women. But my roommate refuses to repeat because she couldn't do 10 and I won with many more.
I hope everyone is having a fun weekend.
