I Have A Question For Those Of You That Do Go To The Movies And Use Either The Closed Captioning Or Rear View Captioning. Which Do You Prefer? My Movie Theature Gave Me Headphones And I Said Hello I Am Deaf I Cant Hear. I Am Very Upset That They Didnt Have What I Wanted. But I Did Write A Letter And Soon They Will Be Having Both. But I Wanna Know Which Works Better And Why You Like It.

Thanks

Hello everyone!
First of all, I think that everyone should know that I am not deaf. However, I come from a deaf household; my mother is deaf, my little sister, my little brother, and my mother's boyfriend. I'm planning to become an interpreter as I get older because I have a lot of experience in that area. I'm also planning to become a business lawyer to help the deaf community. I know that some deaf people have a hard time understanding and negotiating contracts, so I want to help. Especially in Florida because Floridians do not know deaf law. At this time I'm 16 and I'm writing a research paper on my future career as an ASL Interpreter. Is anyone up for an interview? It'd be most appreciated.

Taking a Step in the Right Direction...

It's 5 am on a Thursday morning as I am sitting here with no sleep for almost 24 hours. It's a great time to really reflect where you stand in the world and where your dreams lie. Not really, but it just so happens to be the situation I'm in at the moment and I've decided to just go with the flow and post my first blog.

Yesterday around 3-o'-clock in the afternoon I arrived at the door of the Communication and Language Arts office. I went over to the lady at the desk and asked for a form to change my major from Education to English. She gave me the paper and I sat down in the chair adjacent from her and filled out the form. To backtrack, throughout the past week or so my current English professor and disability coordinator here at the university have been advising me to change my major to English since it is my strength and not my weakness.

So I've decided to major in English and hope to work at a newspaper or become an editor or even write a novel. One never knows with all the endless possibilities that are out there in the world within his/her reach.

On top of it all, I feel at peace... It's as if I'm taking a step in the right direction to finding my place in this world.

Hi, My name is Jeanie. I am an ASL student here in Oregon. I am working towards my bachelors in interpreting. I have also been advocating on local Deaf issues, like saving our Deaf school and such. I am also writing a proposal for the Board of Education to try to get ASL put into our public schools as a secondary language. I have a few thoughts about how it could be done for fairly cheap and really help the Deaf community. I am still compiling information to convince the public that it is necessary and that it could be done. So, keep your fingers crossed for me.

Right now I am looking for opinions about Deaf schools vs. mainstreamed schools. I really want to represent the true feelings of the Deaf in my paper. If anyone will take a little time to talk with me, I would really appreciate it. my email is jtaylo38@cp.chemeketa.edu. The only way to make life better is if it is done with team work. I want to help bridge the gap between the hearing and the Deaf and to empower the Deaf community in the decisions that affect them, like their schools and employment etc. Any point of view is ok. I will represent all opinions that are expressed to me. Thanks,, Jeanie T. :ty:

I was just reading an article about a man who used assitive technology to speak directly with his wifes deaf family without her help.
It made me consider how much I appreciated the effort that my deaf ASL instrutor puts forth to teach me and the effort that I have to put in to learn.
The only time that we used a translator was our first day, only to explain the course overview. It just would have been far to difficult for us to comprehend. Teaching or learning another language without the help of a translator gives people a foundation of trust. Me and my classmates (all hearing) now have a unique relationship, we struggle together. It's different than with our other classes.
I intend to continue my education in ASL and more than likely I will be coming out of the experience having made some very close friends.
Anyway thanks for reading ..... it was just a thought.

Anyway thanks for reading ..... it was just a thought.
