what do you think of mainstreaming?

Hi, My name is Jeanie. I am an ASL student here in Oregon. I am working towards my bachelors in interpreting. I have also been advocating on local Deaf issues, like saving our Deaf school and such. I am also writing a proposal for the Board of Education to try to get ASL put into our public schools as a secondary language. I have a few thoughts about how it could be done for fairly cheap and really help the Deaf community. I am still compiling information to convince the public that it is necessary and that it could be done. So, keep your fingers crossed for me.
Right now I am looking for opinions about Deaf schools vs. mainstreamed schools. I really want to represent the true feelings of the Deaf in my paper. If anyone will take a little time to talk with me, I would really appreciate it. my email is jtaylo38@cp.chemeketa.edu. The only way to make life better is if it is done with team work. I want to help bridge the gap between the hearing and the Deaf and to empower the Deaf community in the decisions that affect them, like their schools and employment etc. Any point of view is ok. I will represent all opinions that are expressed to me. Thanks,, Jeanie T.

Hi dreamchaser~
Well I have been deaf all my life and attended deaf school. I love my old school.still wear my hearing aid and wishing I could go back. I started to heard about the mainstreaming school . I don' know what it's like at the mainstream schools. What I heard some saying that after the kids who are under 14 ..requiring to lean their orally and hears the sound and can' learn the sign languages.I have been against CI for years . Because I have been deaf all my life since 5 months old! This have been disappointing me for year what I felt like the dr ...mainstreams seems like pushing the deaf world away and hopefully for the CI to growing and no more deaf people on this world. Sign languages are BEAUTFIUL and there's nothing wrong with that. Deafness people are not ignroant ..if that's what hearing people think but that's not true. I felt like they just want the CI to be like a heairng people but the deaf person will always be a deaf person . Hearing aid always been a good enough for me and I can speak and sign languages and communication with the both world. To the hearing drs ..who ever they are working on their system..programs for the CI.. They are just wanted for money! They don't care about the deafness that's what they do. That's what I beleive .This world is not for hearing people only to live on and journey on. The world is for everyone big and small ... normal or disabilty of all ages. I have been proud of who I am that I am deaf . God created me of who I am that' me. |

Ignorance in the hearing world!I could write forever on this subject. I am so pissed off and hurt over the way that I, a hearie, is percieved by the Deaf community until they get to know me.. BUt, ya know what.. If I were Deaf, I would think EXACTLY the same way about the hearing community.
Hearing people have done so many screwed up things to the Deaf, that I feel ashamed to have ears. I really worry over the mainstreaming of kids into the public schools. I don't worry *as* much when they have a tie to the Deaf community. What bothers me to death is that many of them are purposefully kept away from the Deaf community, and they are pushed, shoved, and abused to the point that they try so hard to act and talk like a hearie... Prettty disgusting.. How can we fix this? Help me to find a way. Tell me how I can bridge the gap.. Please.... |

Hi there..I was mainstreamed all of my life and it didnt do me any good. Sure, I can read and write but I missed out so much in class because I had no support nor any accodomations. I was thrown in classes with 30 plus kids all using spoken skills. I was expected to do the accodomating and as a result, my rights to full and appropriate access to education and socializing were denied. Big time.

I feel bad for both of you of your own experiences in life . I 've seen and heard from the CI people . And those who have never had CI as I can remember they went to the public school with not interptered. Because I was there after I left William.s Baer school ..they sent me to the public school . Boy I was so frustrated and everyday I arrived home I cried . I just couldn't go back tot school the enxt day. I begged my parents please don't make me to go it was sooo frustrating. Then about 6 months later they heard about the deaf school in Frederick. We checked it around hte school campus.I was enrolled and so exciting . I felt so much through! I can read and write and lipreading but when it's comes to the teacher who wrote down onthe blackboard I lost every words they spoken. That's why I always can't accept CI. But I never have CI myself but I have seen and heard myself .

My mother threatened the Flagler School Board to get an interpreter placed in a mainstream school for my little brother and sister. They refused because of some contract they have with the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind. My mother, who is deaf, wanted a better education for them because the ciriculum is horrible. After 3 months and after threatening to sue for breaking federal law, my mother finally convined them to be assign an interpreter for the kids.

Hi I Was Born With A Hearing Loss And Now Its Severe To Profound Unfortunality I Was In Mainstreamed Class Had Speech Therapy Everyday I Was Pulled Out Of English And Math Just Basics Classes. I Never Had What I Have Now In College. When I Went To College Back In 2004 For The 1st Time Iw As Put In Non Credit Courses For 3 Years Bc When I Took The Test.. I Didnt Know Wut It Was Bc I Never Learned Anything. They Treated Me Like Crap, I Was Isolated, Made Fun Of Etc. Being Pulled Out In Mainstreamed Classees Sucked. And Now Till This Day I Wish Iw As At A Different School A Deaf School And Now That I Just Learned Asl 2 Yrs Ago And Im Not The President Of The Club For 2 Yrs Also Its Just A Better Life For Me. And I Wouldnt Change This For The World Bc Now Im Fluent. I Can Hear Somewhat Still But Nothing Like I Used To. Also In Mainstreamed Class I Had 5 People In The Class And I Had An Aid With Me And A Hudge Speaker On My Desk And The Teacher Had Microphone Bc They Thought That Would Help Me. I Struggled Growing Up But Now That Im 22 Yrs Old I Am Happy That Im Me And I Know Asl And I Love The Deaf Communtiy.
