First Time Deaf, Long Time "Hearing Impaired"

Posted 06-16-2008 at 03:05 AM by beach_bummer

Hi all!
This is my very first blog about my experience with deafness. I was diagnosed as deaf at the age of 2, and have been in mainstream school with hearing aids and speech therapy all through elementary school. I'm continuing mainstream schooling now and am 1/2way through college. I had the worst fear of deaf people growing up, and definately felt like I was in limbo that I could expereince the deaf or the hearing world just by taking my hearing aids in or out.

Today is a new day. I have just finished my second year of college and decided to take ASL. With that, the culture, the language, and my identity were all seen on a new level. I am Deaf. I have learned to master lipreading and work with the hearing world, but it is NOTHING compared to signing.

I am so egar now, yet so confused on how to find and assimilate into the Deaf community/world. I want to make Deaf friends, date Deaf boys, find more events where people sign. My family and friends are still confused with my newfound mission. They are all hearing. The first Deaf people that I have met are my teachers. Can you believe it?

I hope that I will accomplish my goal and be able to incorporate signing and Deaf culture into my every day life.

Many more entries to come,

I think that is an amazing story! I am hearing, although I am dating someone who is deaf. Because of him I am being introduced to a whole new part of life...his world. I love it, and I so love learning sign. We have been together for a year and have learned so much. That is amazing you have always been around the hearing and not until college have you been introduced to ASL. I am in the nursing program, and when I finish and become established I plan on becoming an interpreter.
I am here to make new friends and chat.
Congrats to you for opening a new chapter in your life. I would love to hear more.
