new very different tires for better gas

There are a rumor that Michelin Company is the first one that sells its strong plastic tire in August 2012. It will save a lot of gas. This is probably the best design I ever seen, and that makes a lot of sense to me. Here are four pictures. No worries about flat tires, refill air, nails, etc.

it has been around for a long time. wonder what's taking them so long. maybe it was because the original version wasn't that great.

Airless Tire Promises Grace Under Pressure for Soldiers [Slide Show]: Scientific American

notice that the article's date is August 11, 2008. I just found that this is the company that invented it - Home. according to its "about us", looks like it was invented in 2005.

Plastic??? Not a good idea in Arizona where the hot sun will cause the plastic to break down.

Oh good. Bridgestone thermoplastic rib part of the tire is recyclable but still I want to know how well it stay in good shape under the hot sun. I wonder if they are more costly than the regular ones.

Got it, I read the comment, says Michelin's Tweel proved the concept in 2006 or earlier.

Still not finish business, need more time to test.... maybe they try to test on the roads in Arizona to prove if they can stand the brutal heat....

On a test drive on tweels, a sedan handles well enough. The biggest problem is noise, once the speed hits about 50 mph. The noise gets worse the faster you go.

And much of the tire industry might make some noise of its own about having to reinvent itself.

Yeah... it's been around for years. I think the first time I read about it was 4 to 5 years ago.

One good point of those tires could be that the temperature doesn't mean so much.
Wide low profile tires doesn't work properly, if they were filled with air. In a hot day the air pressure might be optimal, but when it begins to rain and the temperature is lower, then it's possible that wide tyres got a water pillow under them. So have to use nitrogen in wide low profile tyres.
With plastic tyres you don't have that kind of problem. I think?

In wintertime they might get imbalanced very easy with ice and snow. Some rims doesn't work properly either.

I wondered if Plastic tires or called "tweels". My concerns that if road is wet or icy, Plastic would slips easily than rubber tires.
