engine will be moody. poor engine performance. decreased lifespan. poor mileage.

oil is what lubricates your engine. dirty oil will gunk it up.

won't matter at all if you can afford to buy a new car.

I've done that on my old car, I didn't change oil until it's over 50k mile, I did top off oil once in ever week when it runs low. No oil leaks but engine burns oil. I stopped changing oil every 3k mile when my car was 170k miles. It still runs good when it reached 225k miles when I sold the car for $100 to my friend who need it. He kept driving until he wrecked the car when it was 235k miles

I agree that if you stop changing oil, the oil become thinner and black, it will not lubricate effectively and part of engine will wears out quickly.

I ever wonder if one use "Honey Oil" for car Very thick grade oil commonly used by Used Car dealer who tried to sell suckers a nice car with worn oil.

I remmy back in 80's that there were Slick 50 commercial that they poured in Slick 50 then run the car for few minutes then drained out oil then removed valve cover and oil pan then start the engine and run it at moderately high speed then they poured sand, nails ect and engine kept running as if it had no effect. Back then I DID think about doing it on my old jeep to show off engine with no valve cover and oil pan and remove side fenders so anyone can see it But I decide not to cuz I was thinking that commercial may be a joke.

Throw a rod and hit an innocent bystander. Oh, no!

THat is the worst thing when you don't change the oil. The recommended invertals is about 3,000 miles in HARSH weather like very hot climates or very cold climates, constant stop n go traffic and commute on freeways 3 miles a day or so. 5,000-7500 miles for normal driving conditions. I change oil every 4,000 to 6,000 miles.

Some newer car allow 10k miles before changing oil. Same here, I changes oil between 4k to 6k miles average. Doesn't hurt tho.

Yeah, some do change oil every 12k to 15k miles, too. Imagine that future cars would change oil every 20k to 30k miles. That would be awesome, but maybe expensive. I don't think that will happen because of greedy oil corporations.

Oil doesn't wear out.. it just that dirt, deposits etc from engine get suspended in the oil..causing wear N tear on engine parts. The Jiffy lube / quick lube places want you to belive you should change your oil every 3K miles.. more profit for them $$$ but most cars today can go 7K or more between oil changes. My VW Jetta TDI gets its oil changed every 10K miles...
check your owners manual for the schedule for your car..

My new 2011 Sienna get oil change every 10k miles, and I am not used to it. When I had Envoy, I always change oil every 3k miles. I think it is nice way to save the oil when every cars is able to keep oil for more than 10k miles. Keep environment safe and clean.

a friend did that for a trade in. the engine blew a week after the trade-in. Full warranty replacement on the dealer.

If your car is an old muscle or vintage, do oil change frequently. Some engines in newer vehicles, can be suffer if the due is over like 5K or more. Noisy valve lifters (hydraulic), can be harden rubber valve stem seals or cam/ crank seals or carbon/sludge build ups that can be increase emission. As today I see the newer vehicles can run over 10K mile on oil change. I think German vehicles can reach 15k or 20k miles ( I ll check out the repair infro at my work tmw).
My son's 2003 Honda Civic w/1.7L's oil life is last 10k miles and filter change every 20K miles according to an owner manual but I changed oil/filter every 5K.

Hi, guys
I looked up the repair infro (Alldata) this morning at my work. Yes Im right about the oil life on a 2009 BMW 328I is 16K miles of a normal oil service interval. Seem to be longest oil life. But I didnt random more other vehicles in the repair infro, maybe other car have longest oil life? I dont know. Of course the oil life in diesel engines are much longer. We discuss about the gasoline powered engines.
Hey, oil services on German cars are not cheap, cost over $100 maybe $200 or more. Why? Mobil 1 syntheic motor oil. Those cars execpt 4 banger engines, have about 8 to 12 quarts of Mobil 1 in the sumps of 6, 8 or 12 banger engines.

Why you got a minivan? Do you have children and a wife? 10k miles, that's really cool!

Don't mean all german cars are over 10k of a oil service.

Look up on 09' VW Rabbit I5 2.5L.

some people change it so often because it's much cheaper than repair. I change my oil every 2,000-3,000 miles even though the manufacturer says every 6,000 miles.

Not really. It's because his engine also runs his equipment, so it actually runs more than the driving miles show. For the amount of hours and miles that the van runs, and its age, the engine is doing very well because he keeps it maintained.

Has TC ever put in some Marvel Mystery oil in with the regular oil? In the gas?

Same here. I used full-time student and full-time job at Chicago and I drove a lot around and very heavy traffic. I change my oil each month and change brake pad each 3-4 months for 3-4 years. Pain in ass. So I moved out Chicago and WHOA! I don't change a oil for almost 4 months and don't change brake pad for over year.

No kids, but I use minivan for extra space to travel, camp, fishing, surfboard, bicycle, etc. I never regret it since I bought it last July.

Ahhh, more space to carry your precious cargo. Is it a 4 cylinder or a V6 model? I'm glad they brought back the 4 cylinder model. The last minivan with a 4 cylinder engine was in late 90's, at least in the USA.

Edit: My bad, Dodge Caravan had the i-4 model until 2007 model year. I thought they stopped doing that in the 90's, ha.
