Choosing a Car Color? This One Is Safest

If you're in the market for a new car, choose one that is silver. Why? Silver cars are involved in far fewer crashes than cars of other colors.

According to a study by researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand that assessed the effect of car colors on the risk of serious injury in over 1,000 Auckland drivers between 1998-99, silver cars were 50 percent less likely to be involved in a crash resulting in a serious injury when compared with white cars.

Reuters reports that the least safe car colors are brown, black, and green. The risk factor for white, yellow, gray, red, and blue cars is in the middle range and about the same for each. Globally, about 3,000 people die every day in a car crash.

About half the drivers in this study had been involved in a crash in which one or more of the occupants had been admitted to the hospital or died, while 571 were not involved in crashes and served as a control group, reports Reuters. Even after taking into account the vehicle and road conditions, driver's age, gender, and educational level, as well as whether the driver had been using drugs or alcohol and had worn a seatbelt, the color of the car still had an impact on the likelihood of a crash.

Why? The researchers have no idea, but they speculate that silver, a light color that is highly reflective, may make cars more visible on the highway. "Increasing the proportion of silver cars could be an effective passive strategy to reduce the burden of injury from car crashes," lead study author Sue Furness told Reuters.

Silver was also the most popular car color in the United States, Europe, and Asia last year, according to the most recent DuPont Global Color Popularity.

The study findings were published in the British Medical Journal

Interest! I am drive on blue car. I had an accident on that car from 4 years ago! Yes, that blue car is still alive and kick. Soon, I will get new car. I dunno what color I want to get.... Ooo! red Jetta!

interesting cuz i read somewhere some time ago that the color yellow is the most safest in all kinds of weather conditions -- uhmm 258 article Illustrator

I would agree.

I would also say that red is in accidents more. Most people who have red cars have a tedency to speed.

Tell that to me....I wrecked a yellow car (78 Toyota Corolla) big time at night.

I'd rather have mine in maroon after all I had more maroon and red cars than any other color including my present Sable (Medium Midnight Tor-Red)

It's a factory color of course. It was a 1978 and yellow was often a factory color way back in the 1960s and 1970s.

Nowadays yellow are much used on sports cars like the Corvette, Pontiac GTO, Ferrari Enzos and Porsches than the average 4 door sedan.

Looks like colors and cops depend on luck or whatever. I get in trouble with cops oftens when I drive silver, gray or white cars. Red and maroon cars, I had no trouble with cops *knock wood hard and harder*

Late 70's has bad paint coat for Yellow so I have 2003 YELLOW (best paint coat) so now it is more safest, I think.

Let me ask Fly Free. :)

MizzDeaf -- yes back in the 70s like Sablescort had said its factory color not like today's choices and yes the color yellow was nasty back then :barf: hahaha

Well, I hope my YELLOW car still safe for long time. :) *knock on the wood*

Funny think -- Fly Free has BLACK honda and my YELLOW Cavalier ... mmmmm it will be BIG BEE when both are together!

Awwwwww, my car is red, bought it brand new 4 years ago, and never got involved in any car accidents (touch wood). Okay, I will buy silver car later on. I received car speed ticket about once per year more or less ~ its not too bad!
I thought red car is sexy color!

 hahah MizzDeaf thats true haha

:sure: about the colors of the vehicles. i dont believe in that kind of crap! depends on the individual's maturity in driving. i had a red truck before never had any accidents or tickets, one gold truck and another blue truck both had been in accidents so therefore it doesnt matter on the color.

thats also true and should be taken in consideration as well on the maturity of the driver -- especially teen drivers!!!! theyre not quite mature enuf to realize the responsibilities on the road also includes not speeding and no recklessness behaviors as well

You're right, it shouldn't matter with you. However, it does matter to other people. It's based on the psychology of color. Different colors has different effects on different people. For instance, having a yellow wall behind your computer monitor is bad for your eyes since it contradicts with the viewing of your monitor. Cops tend to focus on red cars during their speed traps. Rare colors (pink, purple, orange) tend to attract attention and can lead to accidents for other people.

"Whoa! *looks away from road* Look at that orange car!" CRASH!
