Here’s Why You Should Never Run Over a Mattress

Here’s Why You Should Never Run Over a Mattress

The owner of this vehicle came in complaining of a “shimmy” at high speeds. I guess 60 pounds of wire wrapped around the driveshaft will do that. More pics after the jump!

http://blog.cardomain.com/2008/12/17/heres-why-you-should-never-run-over-a-mattress/

We must watch out for mattress on the freeway or roads that should not run over the mattress - YIKES!!!!

Dang that's stupid.

I remember when I was driving on the freeway, there was a king sized mattress on my lane, so lucky I had plenty of time to switch lane as I wouldn't want to drive over it with my old truck.

Whoa, dangerous and major repair bills. ( maybe bend driveshaft or rip the shaft seals of the tranny or axle, can be ignite fuel leak where the wire meshed wrap the driveshaft and whip the gas tank) Ive seen those mattress on the freeway be4.

I bet mechanics are leery over springed wires that would snap if they cut the wire. I bet they stood back with long cutting torch for precaution.

Dang! Had something similar happen to my riding mower. Hit a roll of barbwire.

And those little plastic garbage bag.. I advise to avoid those as well. Last week I hit one and it stuck to my muffler. All of s sudden I started smelling burning plastic all through the car.

Pulled over and saw it stuck and burning on my muffler. I peeled it off and went on my way. I could smell burning plastic for a week while driving.

I am surprised the car was still able to run after getting all that tangled up!

u crazy. No way to torch the ****ed meshed mattress springs looped on the driveshaft is in place of the vehicle. Gas tank!!! u instant. I wud advise a customer to replace a new or reman. complete driveshaft (come w/ new U-joints) and replace seals if necessary. Easy money than the dirty work. If u want to cutting the ****ed meshed mattress springs, how long will it take? 2 or 3 hours? Waste.

I've seen mechanic welds exhaust pipe near gas tank several times. They know what they're doing. I would agree that removing shaft would be easier but it still requires cutting some wires wrapped around end of tranny and end of axle differental in order to remove shaft.

I would agree get a new or remanufactured shaft because of balance issue. I bet the mattress wire wrapped shaft may have bent just a little. Little bent can affect balance greatly thus wearing out bearings and U-Joints.

That's what I thought so. Remove the driveshaft should less than 10 minutes.

I don't think that cause out of balance. The mattress springs can't bent the driveshaft. The driveshaft is kind heavy and very strong. Almost never will break it. U-Joint probably break it.

yep, Im not think of the muffler shops. Good point. I dunno but interestly the muffler shops always have the lifting racks on the outside, more safe w/ cutting torch. Me? no no no.
You are right abt the balance issue on the driveshaft cuz the balance weight tabs welded on the driveshaft that probaby the mattress wires chip the balance weight tabs off cause unbalance driveshaft

If you want to cut the mattress wires off the driveshaft and inspect the driveshaft for damaged or bent or twisted or balance tabs missing then remove the driveshaft for service but one thing is the debris on the floor. You need to mop out the debris. You know how much time for this job? Sounds dirty job.

I knew about it. Cuz when shaft is spinning at high speed, the mattress wires wrapped can get caught briefly by hooking on bolts or protruded parts of underbelly of the car which in place can "squeeze" the spinning shaft. It can chip off the weight tabs. Weight tabs are spot welded which sometime are not strong.
