Deaf in the Militaryn (Video - Subtitled)

And here I thought my spirits would be lifted by this...I am trying to join the Navy, and very frustrated about my hearing disqualifying me.
 
Well, when i was teenager who never vote any who's running for president. They called me. They tried to draft me for be an army recruiter but, my parent told them i'm deaf/hoh and then, they disqualified me for join army. what a waste.

I've been asked to join the army and i told them i cannot do that ,He reply to me why not ? I said that i am deaf .he said it is no problem oh well u know what i reply to him "If i join the army and can u imagine some ambush running behind me while i am struggling to hear where is it coming from then i would get shot up my ass :D He was laughing well i was being serious face :L .
POLICY ,Health & safety and insurances is full bull shit .
 
I support deaf/hoh in service but, personally I'm what some call a hippie.
 
Very interesting! I was just wondering about this earlier today. He brings up several good points. If injured veterans have been successfully accommodated, why not admit deaf/HoH people into the military? I am curious where all the non-combat positions are. Are they all in combat zones, or are some here in the US?
 
I had a deaf friend who use hearing aids, Jimmy. He got into marine with no problems. They didn't know he was deaf until they found him in the shower with the hearing aids on the bench. haha. I also had a little bit of fun messing with a recuiter over emails. I asked him for opinions on the deaf and why it was not ok to hire them. He replied with a lot of faults in his answers and I PINNED him down on all of them. In one of the emails i asked "So what will the hearing soliders do when they can't hear each other over the sound of multiple things?" He said "they do hand signals" I said "and what do Deaf people do?" "wouldn't they be a bit more safer since they don't have to speak. No enemies would hear us coming" lol. He stopped talking to me after that.

I talked to a recruiter in high school. I wore hearing aids then. They told me several times to sign up and go to Oakland CA for a physical and hearing test. Let the military decide on my eligibility. By my HS graduation my hearing had gone downhill to the point that I couldn't communicate much without the aids. As I understand it, at the time, new recruits couldn't use the aids to qualify on a heaing test. Officers could sign or re-enlist if they had prescription glasses and their vision was corrected. I guess the armed forces were worried about dead batteries or just unwilling to accomodate. I knew they wouldn't take me. I didn't bother signing up. I do not know what the story is now and am too old and have a kid to take care of.

What happened after they found him with the hearing aids and the discovery of his hearing impairment? did he get kicked out?

What happened after they discovered his hearing impairment? Did he get kicked out??

When was this? He didn't get a physical exam? They didn't noticed him wearing hearing aids? Did he wear the aids when he was swimming? How long was he in before they noticed his hearing aids? What happened to him?
 
Can you please answer the question. I have contacted the Canadian military and plan on sending in the application requirements as soon as possible, but obviously wanted to get some insight. Thanks
 
I agree, its our time as deaf people to enlist as soon the policy changes. Its silly as an American to find out that other countries enlist deaf people and not us.

Its embarrassing to find out that 80% of military positions are noncombatant able to be served by deaf people.

Hope this changes sooner than later for Keith Nolan and the cadet at Citadel to be able to serve before they're too old.

This video made my day as a deaf person that felt like crap for not being able to do a certain simple thing and to see the video just put me on a good mojo to keep on going and continue fighting for my rights as a human being that just happens to be deaf.
 
I was turned away because I couldnt pass the hearing test, maybe I should throw this in their faces or sue for discrimination?
 
I always dream of joining military.

If I was hearing, I'd probably kill a million enemies off the face of earth. Also, it would help me with sobriety.

Umm, if those are your reasons for wanting to join the military, then you're not suited for service, regardless of hearing status.

The last thing most normal military members want to do is to kill people. They will do it as necessary but it certainly isn't a desire. Also, if you have a problem with sobriety, there's a good chance it will get worse in the military. Drug and alcohol abuse is a problem in the military even though they have programs set up to combat the problem.

Actually. This is a pale low in statistics in comparison to most alcoholics who are civilians.

It's even mentioned in the Alcoholic Anonymous bible, which mentioned that soldiers tend to have some degree of tolerance and discipleship.

But of course, I don't expect you to know, since you are not alcoholic yourself...

Just saying.

No, I'm not an alcoholic, but I'm the daughter of one, and have other family members who are, including one who is a member of AA.

However, I and my husband are retired members of the military, so I do know what I'm talking about in regards to the military environment.

But of course, I don't expect you to know, since you are not military yourself....

Just saying.
