i filed for ssi on my little one back in june..i have a question about that.
can a child with hearing loss at the same level as my son qualify? he also has his other issues too but someone told me that hearing loss is one of the qualifiers. i am not going to be able to go back to work any time soon and this going to the doctor 3-4 days a week is killing us.

you also need to file ssi for yourself. You don't have to be disabled to get ssi it is income based (welfare). A child with hearing loss at a certain db can qualify. SS has an excellent site that has answered all of my questions I have had about SS. If there is anything you dont see on it just type it in in the search box and it will pop up! Also, if you are not working I would go to your local job and family services and apply for medicaid. SSi you automatically get it when you qualify but it would take care of the bills piling up now and they may be able to steer you in the right direction for any other questions you have.

It would be a good idea to ask more questions at your local SSA about the medicaid, family health, food stamp and any concerns about the check. every individual is different based on limited resource, and hearing loss level.

I copied a statement from socialsecurity.gov--"SSI makes monthly payments to people with low income and limited resources who are 65 or older, or blind or disabled."

So it means that the applicant with low income has to be 65 or older, or is disabled or blind (if he/she is under 65) to be eligible for SSI.

I don't think the OP is 65 or older since she has a deaf child, therefore to apply for SSI for herself, she has to be disabled or blind.

What's more, the government no longer financially supports low-income people who are not disabled and under 65. I don't think we have welfare anymore. Remember Ex-Pres Reagan approved it (cut welfare) and told people who used to live on welfare to get a job?

The welfare is not under SSA (Social Security Adm) but SSI is. We used to have welfare for non-disabled parents with no income or low income a long time ago. However those poor parents still get food stamps from welfare.

Like I said before, SSI (Supplemental Security Income) is for disabled or old people with no income or low income only. SSDI (Social Security Disability Insurance) is for disabled people who have worked 10 years or more and have paid SS taxes (old name-FICA) to earn 40 credits in order to be eligible.

Of course, a proof of long-term disability from a doctor is required for either SSI or SSDI which are only two disabilty benefits SSA pays.

Yes. They tend to provide benefits for children at lesser losses because of the added expense of education and therapies. With all of Frankie's issues, you should have no difficulty in obtaining SSI for him.

This is incorrect. SSI is available as supplemental security income to those who have a documented disability that requires more than average amounts of medical care and accommodation. As soon as the child's SSI is granted, he will automatically be given Medicaid. She does not need to apply for it in addition to SSI benefits. The mother will be listed as the "payor" but the benefits paid are for the child are are expected to be used to provide for that child's needs.

Additionally, when the SSI payments are approved, they will back pay to the date that she applied to help cover past expenses.

What about deaf children of deaf parents who have no or low income? Can they get the benefits as well?
