Target Employment
Hello everybody!
I am employed at Target. I am looking for a promotion but there is some concern about me communicating with team members because theyuse walkie talies throughtout the store to communicate. So I have some questions... is there a device/technology that is like a walike talkie with closed caption? Is there a device or technology where i can respond with written wrods and it will be relayed to all team members? I am looking for something my boss will have access to easily. |

I actually know of a deaf girl who works as a team leader at Target. She doesn't use the walkie talkie and usually has her team members grab her if anything arises.

There are short range alphanumeric pagers that might be helpful.
At my workplace I just carried my cell/mobile phone with me and they're text me if I didn't respond to pages/were looking for me etc. The other thing they'd do is call me and leave a message directly on my voice mail. My cell/mobile providers has (for Hoh/Deaf) a free "voice-to-text" feature using "SpinVox" (part of Dragon Naturally Speaking) which then sends a text message/SMS to my phone with the text version of the spoken voicemail (about 95% accurate) - it's very helpful ![]() There are always ways to make it "work" - it's often just about being creative. I'd have the employee contact a few of the disability services/organizations or Hoh/d/Deaf specific organizations in the area to see if they have any ideas. Their Audie might also be able to point them in the right direction in terms of organizations and products that might help.

All I can tell you it all depends on your personality. You can either show you can do faster and better then others and still do it with a smile in a bad situation, or your employees you will with will have negative comments.
In todays economy, bosses will pass over us deaf/hoh since its easier for them and don't want to deal with communication. Remember- when introducing a technology to people to help you to do your job better, they will naturally be apprehensive with their nose turned up. If you are trying to implement a "new procedure" to the working staff on how to contact you as a way to prove why you can get a promotion- you will face some difficult barriers. I suggest that you try to get something like this implemented for a year or so and prove it dramatically improves your working conditions BEFORE you even think of getting a promotion. I am sorry to say- but I been encountered in those situations like that before and see the hard truths. You are not going to get the proof needed to convict your bosses of deaf discrimination since most of them are smart enough not to show it to you as part of the game. |

Target is too fast for my taste. I worked in a distribution center for 1 week and half and didn't like the pace. It was overwhelming for me. Target likes to force people to work fast, fast and fast.

I worked at Home Depot, got promoted to department supervisor - most of the time people came and found me instead of trying to page/call me. That worked 99% of the time considering everyone knew who I was or where I was at any given moment.

Seriously? *scratches head* I'm sorry, I don't follow this at all... Of course they want you to work fast, efficient and hustle, hustle. No lollygagging around or goofing off. If you're looking for a job where you can fart around and basically be lazy all day, you certainly aren't going to find it at any big corporation level department stores like Wallyworld, Target, Home Depot, Sears, etc., etc.

Some people cannot work in fast pace for health reason or different physical action, especially Sequioas mentioned in his post. I'm not lazy and you just got wrong point about whoever is lazy because can't work in fast pace, also guess what? my old manager told me that I'm one of best employee in overstock area and work in normal pace.
