I was shocked when I see a topic like this, it made a sick feel to my stomach at the fact that people who post topic on here doesn't seem to have any problem with it...

I am a creator of facebook group "Deaf is not Disability" which have over 1340 members on it. I wasn't expecting the deaf site to have a "Disability" topic.

I honestly don't believe in disability, I think all of the people are humans but have something that is missing from their body.

I believe there is "disability" its got nothing to do with the missing body piece, or disfigurement or impairment. I think you should read Michael Oliver's Understanding Disabilty. .. you dont even understand the word....
i dont believe IN disability but i believe it exists and it exists because of ignorance, intended or not intended i dont care, its no excuse.

there is a difference between believe in and believe its there...big difference!

Just because there is a forum about ADA does not mean the people here view themselves as disabled. It is merely a place to talk about the law and issues dealing with personal rights.

Some people in here are dealing with more than deafness. I'm glad it is in here i have learned alot from it. :)

What might be the "more than deafness" be?

If you don't understand how disability rights work to help you, your life is going to be more difficult.

Special thanks to Grum and Botti et al for the well phrased comments.

Leo Mary, is this a plug for your FB page? Surely not?! You could do well to study the forum dealing with said rights. Really, read it.

You might not believe that deafness is a disability, and that's fine, but that doesn't change the law. The law is called the Americans with Disabilities Act. It's that same law that provides you with communication access via captions, VRS, CART, and interpreters. It provides you with more safety via enhanced smoke/fire alarms with strobes requirements for public buildings.

This section of AD is for threads relating to that Act. There's nothing offensive or denigrating meant by the title in this forum.

I'm with everyone here. Take a good look at the forum and most of the attitudes here. You have a lot to learn.

As for me, I am hearing but DISABLED. I was born with a hole in my spine that was surgically closed when I was a few days old. I use and have used the term "disabled" to describe myself because I believe in calling a spade a spade. However, this DOES NOT mean that I am less than or that I have a negative view of myself Quite the contrary.

We need to stop getting so caught up with terms and learn to be comfortable in our own skin. If we did that, terms wouldn't matter to us so stinking much.

Leo Mary, please let me temper my earlier post.

I did not realize that you are in high school or near that age. You are quite young. You are still learning. You have not had the decades of life experience that many others do.

I also noticed the low number of your posts. Let me start again. Hello! Welcome to Alldeaf, and thank you for posting. As you see, we will not always agree. Do not let that deter you. It is a great way to learn. I speak from experience. Do not be offended, but read the comments and try to understand the viewpoints.

I also didn't realize that Leo Mary was so young. Stick around, LM. You will learn a lot here.

It's fine. I grew up in hearing's world most of my life anyway. I lip-reading and speak with my family, they doesn't learn any sign language because they all are stuck with German and English language anyway (Me either). Everyone I know doesn't believe in D.A. I guess my area is more used to (non-d.a) term or it's the American who believe they are D.A themselves? (Not to be rude or anything)
You are not American? Ah, that explains why you didn't know about the ADA. That means my examples about its provisions wouldn't apply to you.

It's not that Americans believe they are more disabled than other nationalities. It's just that the ADA law applies only to people in the United States. Deaf people in other countries don't have the ADA. Some have similar laws but not exactly the ADA.

I'm not sure what you mean by "Everyone I know doesn't believe in D.A." :dunno:

My friends, family, and people I met don't believe in D.A at all. In our location, word "Disable" is very offended to us all. My doctor never use term "Disability", he never talk about my deafness, ever, not once in my life. If my classmates insult me, they never call me disabled, instead they call me "Nazi Girl" (It's not really a offend). I have asked people about disable once, they all think disability is a word that is used to offend people. We don't have that kind of law in our country, not even one that I know of.
You don't find being called a Nazi offensive?

Your doctor never talks about your deafness? Does he pretend that you're hearing?

If your country doesn't have law that protects the rights of disabled people then what laws provide you access to interpreters?

Do you have laws that provide access for blind people, people who use wheelchairs, etc.?

I feel 'deafness' is a 'Disability' because of the way public treat people that
are deaf or HOH! You would not believe how people act when they realize
I am HOH! The person was the one with the ' Disability' for thinking I was
S L O W because I was wearing 2 HA!!
