I was just wondering if there are any other HOH or Deaf members that are currently or were previously employed by the Canadian Government and had accomodation measures implemented for your job.

Specifically I am wondering about the Fitness To Work process through Health Canada...as I am currently in the midst of this...just wondering what may come out of it.

Other employees that have had similar experiences outside of the Government are welcome to chime in.

I was 27 yrs DND and 20yrs PSAC with DND. I had to retire from Public Service, due to my HOH, I could not relay instructions to my oprs or from my oprs to my own boss. So, I was forced to retire, mind you, I was almost done with work at the time anyway. Now I am enjoying retirement, but been HOH, I can functionne properly with friends and family in a quiet atmosphere. Now, on thursday, the CHS, are getting me a TTY/CO, Which will be a brand new experience for me.

what is kind of implentation on job? I wonder you Canada implementation I interesting surprised wow really!

I will likely work for the Canadian Government during my work terms throughout university. What suggestions would you have for a moderate-severe HOH student? Are the jobs reliant on strong hearing? I also understand that there are mandatory bilingual requirements when working for the federal government... is it required for all jobs within the public service? Would I be better off working for the Ontario government in the future? I understand that this is a bit off-topic, but seeing your thread brought up several questions.

Hey loghead,

As for the manditory bilingualism...that is not the case at all. Some specific jobs may be designated bilingual such as my supervisors position, however at the technician level I am at, there is no requirement at all...but you do get an $800 bonus each year if you are

Personally, I would go federal govt over provincial...I feel we are better compensated for what we do...but with any govt job there is always the danger of downsizing when a new govt is brought in.

As I am relatively new to the HOH world (started just before I took on this job) I cant give you much help as a student.

carboa.. I will be 2 years in with PSAC under EC in the new year..unfortunately for me retirement is still about 28 years away haha

does the CHS pay for these units or are you basically buying from them??

I have resisted going the TTY/VCO route but since my hearing continues to decline, I may not have a choice for much longer. I am liikely going to get a Blackberry at work as it will allow me to have better contact with the office when I am out in the field.
