Recently my neighbor who once had a good relationship with me and my girlfiriend has started calling me, "puXXy," the female body part. That is the only word my neighbor knows in sign language.

Is this a form of hate crime against deaf people? If it is a hate crime, what evidence do I have to do to have my neighbor charged?

I don't know.

If he keep harrassing you and won't leave you alone, maybe you should report to the police and put a restraining order from him. YOu need proof though and proof that you asked him to stop calling you.

I don't think it's a "hate crime"....it can be or is not an insult....Then again.....I've known people to say "aww, he's a pussy"!...meaning that he acts so "macho and mean"...but is really a pussy....would not hurt anyone at all....has a good heart, etc. ........Or...."he's a pussy" with the meaning that he's too scared to do what he has threated to do......But, again, since it's the only thing that he knows in sign language.....who taught him that?

Hearing people use this word a lot, around their friends, when describing someone....I'm sure deafies do also.....

It depends upon the situation....whenever he calls you "a pussy".....as an insult, or just to be playing around....

Before you jump into conclusions that it's a "hate crime"...why don't you ask him why he is calling you "a pussy"??....He will probably say he is just "kidding around"....and if you don't like it, let him know!...And teach him other signs....it's possible that he just wants to be ur friend, but doesn't know how to talk to you! And is just "being smart"....then again, if both of you are at odds with each other (meaning dislike each other)....then just call him "a pussy" right back!

Labeling this a "hate crime"...nahh!...it's a word commonly used today among men....

yes, I've seen my brother and his friends (both hearing) love to say stuffs like this to each other. they are bunch of weirdos.

But if you two have stopped being friends, yeah, he sounds like he may be harrassing you.

It's only a hate crime if a crime is committed, such as assault or vandalism against you. Also, it's only a "hate" crime if the crime is committed specifically because of your sex, nationality, ethnicity, race, religion, or sexual orientation.

Just calling you a name, no matter how crude, is not by itself a crime (re: First Amendment). If your neighbor uses a derogatory name, and threatens violence, then it might be a crime. If your neighbor sprays graffiti on your property, that's a crime. Depending on what the graffiti says, it might be a hate crime. You have to document everything with witness statements, photographs, videos, or proof of damage.

If you used to have a good relationship with your neighbor it might be a good idea to calmly approach him and ask what happened. It might be the result of a misunderstanding. Relationships usually don't change without a reason.

I'm curious. That's the only sign your neighbor knows? Who taught it to him?

Good point Reba. This is just a follow-up of your point on the Black Panthers. It is considered very offensive for a white person to use the "n" word in reference to a black person but no blacks seem to find the use of the work "cracker" when a black calls a white by that word. Which proves my statement: Humans are the most stupid animal on the face of the earth.

Try telling that to Carl Schroeder.

I like Reba's suggestion on how to resolve this issue with your neighbor.

No, it isn't a hate crime as he didn't physically harm you based on your deafness.

Reba, my neighbor and I used to have a good relationship. I have helped him out such as buy him tuppperware so he can store left overs, take him and his girlfriend out with me and my girlfriend for valentine's day, take the pair to the laundromat etc etc. It was me who taught him the sign among many others. It was after he started his job that his attitude towards me took a 180 degree turn around.

I am well respected around the neighborhood while he has no friends locally. What I fear the most is that other people will pick up the sign and use it towards me.

It seems strange that his attitude would take such a sudden turn. If at all possible, try to find out what happened, and see if it can be fixed.

If your other neighbors respect you I doubt that they'll all of a sudden want to flash insulting signs at you. If they do (perhaps inadvertently if your neighbor isn't honest about what the sign means when he shows them), then calmly explain to them that it's offensive to you, and ask them please not to do it.

Since you taught him the sign, are you sure that he isn't trying to be funny (in poor taste, granted) but doesn't mean to harm you? :dunno:

Yeah, about "if your neighbor isn't honest about what the sign means.......". He might be be connivingly telling others that it means, "Good morning!"
