I agree with these people who are claiming now. If I ever get laid of my goal is to apply for disability because like this guy said "aint nobody gonna hire me", especially nowadays. Until then, I'm going to work as long as I possibly can.

Its said and true. When you get to the point of age where employers discriminate agianst coupled with fact most of us are deaf/HOH its EXTREMELY hard to prove that is the reason they didnt hire me or us when we are out of work. There are SOOO many regualar people out there hungry for work because of the enconomy and they need the money to live and eat. For us who uses the SSA as a crutch to live, there is a cutoff point for starting pay to work again and most employers do not want to pay at that point coupled with possible extra costs like interpreters, scripts, extra training time , etc. GUYS and GALS- calm down- yes I know about the ADA law, but you HAVE to prove it why they didnt hire you. Companies WILL find other reasons , no matter how trivial on why they didnt hire you because in reality its cheaper to hire someone else.

IF companies STOP sending work overseas and Americians stop complaining of cost of things we buy made in USA, companies WILL start hiring us deaf/HOH because they KNOW we are more loyal, cheaper, better and hardest working group because we have to be due to our disability although we deaf/HOH don't look at it this way.

However about the pay, too many Americans demands higher pay, higher wages which would in turn encourages employer outsourcing these positions. I have seen this happening since 1970's and know what it is like.

These unions does not pay attention to this and is actually hurting US economy, and I can prove easily, where I grew up, it is the heart of Iron city, steel making. Unions fought hard, left and right to get decent pay and they did won, but it was shortlived, almost all steel corprations had moved to China, and China had started up their steel mills down there. This have effectively wiped out 98% of union jobs within Steel mill. That was back in late 70's. Now I no longer see any steel mill down there. We are now in global competitive. Wake up!
 
Some people quit their job becuase they are HOH or deaf. giving them a hearing responsibility is very intimidating (if that's the right word) people who hired them know they will eventually quit. It's like this, They hired someone who depend on a wheelchair, and tell them what are the responsibility of such and such (the position they were hired for).. and the person realize he can't do it because there are a lot of steps and he have to do a lot of figuring out his way around it.... so he quit. They didn't even have to fire him, they knew he'll have some struggle but left it to him to figure it out. In my case, it was the phone issue.
 
At my old job in Missouri, they got a video phone in the office. There isn't a deaf or hoh person there now, but they wanted to remain as totally ADA compliant as possible, and felt this would benefit them in the long run. They also have special monitors for people with vision problems and have installed an elevator in the building. There is a space in the kitchen for working dogs to have their own food there and they have fenced off an area in the grass next to the parking lot for a dog run and potty place. The janitor has no problems using the pooper scooper daily. There are 3 service dogs and 1 person with vision problems working there now. I was the hoh person. I moved before I lost all of my hearing and am no longer there.
 
Wow, Kristina, that type of accommodation is unheard of in this area. What type company was it? (you dont have to name them) We cant even get our theater to provide accommodation - yah, I know - there's less than 10 of us - but no local company will do this at all. Way to go for your former employer.

It was a mental health and drug/alcohol counseling office.

They have 3 residential treatment centers in Missouri. one for men with detox, residential and outpatient treatment. 1 for women and children without the detox and the 3rd was for clients with a combined mental and drug problem that was both men and women, residential and outpatient. We also had 9 outpatient offices all over central Missouri. Like I said, I worked in the admin office and did billing. Just got an email from my old boss. She wants to know if I want to do some of their billing even here in Florida, since it is all web-based and I have already been HIPPA cleared and have a dedicated fax line for HIPPA purposes. I told her I would have to see if I could spare the time around MIL and mother and all the medical appointments and my home school schedule.

Seriously..the phone issue fucking pisses me off...we have more than enough technology to surpass the stupid phone requirements.

Wait until the baby boomers start dying of heart-attacks, then instant messengers and chatrooms will be the norm.

I swear...some hearing people should be labeled "hearing and dumb" ...If they dont know about VRS, fine but email or texting? Come on! Now, that is plain plain DUMB of them not to incorporate them for deaf workers. I dont care what kind of excuses they come up with..I wont believe them.

Especially since so many hearing people are obsessed with texting and emailing and IM'ing.
 
Yes everything that has been true.. however.. my wife remain suffer and keep search the job. Compare the last year and this year. Last year, she only got 2 interview but this year 10 interviews. Compare those interviews and 1 not hiring her and one hired her. In few months later; thing has change due the lay off and affect her workplace. She got lay off from job and still searching...

She went interview and all decline without explain expect two honest answer to my wife which my wife acceptance their explain and why they are not hiring her.

The rest of other interview which make me mad even she mad too. They decline her resume or hiring that position for 13 years and beside that before she still under 30's and yes she have three letters recommend about her... still declining. She doesn't understand even family doesn't understand either. EVEN the three person who wrote the recommend doesn't understand either!

However; it kind of dry up and it harder on us. The budget wasn't quiet expect and kind for failure not what I expect... you know what I hate... the Christmas. Sometime it does crush me but have little brighter in there... because we all do have a hope...

Again; about soaring disability income... I understand how they felt but... the budget isn't what they want do future such as vacation... have some nice home... some of them want more children filling in house. We all have dream and investing it.. with that disability; what point to keep USA grow!?

Companies need GROW UP.... I am sorry to say that but they NEED NEED to Grow up and be realized!

I don't think it's normal company policy to exlude HOH and deaf, more like the hiring manager involved in the hiring process. It might be that they think we would be a liability rather than an asset. When you hire someone, communications and team work are almost more important than skills to them-thats why its alot harder for us. These managers don't have the time, the training, the patience and they do not want to take the risk-it's all in their head but thats why we still have racism, discrimination, sterotypes etc...still.

Sure there are laws that protect us, but, they can also hurt us because it makes us look like a possible liability to most. I have been working here for 11 years and I have worked very hard to make us look more like an asset, including taking part in the companies persons with disability focal group.

In these group sessions, it's important to not only let them know we have some needs but just as important to let them know we are proud that they don't discriminate and allow us to be part of the team and as a result makes us a harder working, more loyal employee than most people.

I know that I am very fortunate because I am inside the door already, but I also know that once outside again, attaining a new job is going to be a challange.
