Tell ur boss to watch you do customer service esp when stocking shelves and if a customer comes and asks you for something, just do anything to make a sale and u will impress the boss. If u can read lips and have good speech skills that no plm. I know some deafies do cashiers at walmart or target, but it isnt my kind of job I would wanna do there.
Trust me as I'm a 3rd shift O/N stocker at the Walmart and I had many customers come ask me to find sumthing for them and I guess I must have made a lot of sales cause I just pretty much know what the customer wants and I can find em quick. That came in handy esp when I get assigned to Pets, Automotive, Toys, Furniture or Hardware. What I do is if a customer approaches me and start to speak, I gotta grab a piece of cardboard and give the customer a sharpie from my pocket. 98% of the time the customer will be willing to take the pen and write it down. |

I don't work as a cashier, but I have dealt with finance/customers. How do you feel about communicating with customers? Like you said, it will be busier during Christmas, which could make things harder for you. Anyway, if you feel confident to take on cashier duties, why not ask your boss for a trial run? You could also ask your work colleagues for support.

A lot of the cashiers I know at Safeway are usually deaf...
They must have a really good union... because I can always find at least one deaf employee at a Safeway, no matter what town I go to.

The more you talk about your community... the more I want to move to Maryland and neighbouring states...

Friend of mine is a cashier at Home Depot....not too much of a problem....but since the Holidays are fast approaching, people are shopping more, and the need to keep the check out lines moving fast and faster.....
Maybe ask ur boss to give it a trial run, maybe in the 20 items or less line just for the Holiday period? Even the hearie cashiers have a few problems themselves, not sure what the item is...if it's on sale, how much a lb. etc. |

Yep, it is part of my job. I am chief cashier and do books, keep records and act as mgr when she is gone. I am just a clerk, but do run the cash drawer. It can be hard when the environment is noisy or the customer wants to be a jerk, just like any other job. I have done this job for 11 years now, and have been deaf for a lot of that time. Isnt it illegal to refuse to give you a chance? I dont know, that is why I ask.
It isnt the same as a regular cashier job though, because it is a mail room. The wants and needs are very predictable. |

A lot of the customers was very understanding about their deafness and many even praised the Team Leaders for letting them run the registers. They had a blast doing business with them. They all keep notepads with them and often do body languages with them that can easily be understood. When you get enough replies regarding this issue, print this out and give it to your boss. Yiz |

I would think you could handle being a cashier, no problem. I couldn't myself, just because of my anxiety issues and dealing with customers.. Already tried that when I worked at the deli for Safeway's, I quit after 2 weeks, it was just insane for me blah. So I definitely wouldn't want to do any job that directly deals with customers, just for my own sake, at least not for the time being anyway.
Best of luck to you though, if you can convince your manager to let you be cashier! |

yes, you can be a cashier. Hey, I was a 7-11 cashier for three years. And worked alone sometimes, and on second shift where everyone is getting off from work. People always ask for cigarette brand or punch in a lottery ticket for them and I did fine, and no matter how much these people was in a hurry, Most of them are very understanding if I couldn't understand them. (but some are grumpy, especially those who aren't regular customers).
Your boss is ignorant. Most deaf are or were cashiers.

That good idea! I work clothes shop in large shopping center. I often man the cash desk. Most people just pay and say thank you. If ask a question it's always the same. How much? Another size? Do you have this in red ect ect! I can read lips quite well and my speech is very good so most do not realise I am deaf. The odd time I have problem I just ask girl beside me to help. It no big deal. No one ever complain yet.

I used to work as a cashier at Super Target in Nebraska and had no problem dealing with customers and their transactions. There isn't any special skill required to talk to them other than asking them if they will be using cash, check or charge for their purchases. Most of the customers I dealt with were very understanding, and some of them were even deaf or disabled.
I think your boss is ignorant of what you can do as a worker and not as a disabled person if that's his/her perception. Ask him/her again to be given a chance to run a cash register for one day or night to see if you like it or not. Never hurt to try than to never try. |

I work as Cashier. The managers loves me because I'm an efficient worker and don't ask many questions. They also made sure that under my name there is a line 'I am deaf' on my name tag. Also they made a couple of signs- one said 'please be patient as I'm deaf' affixed to the register so when customers comes into my aisle they see the sign and go 'ohh right'. Sometimes they'd ask me questions like 'do you lipread?' When I don't understand customer's request then I'd offer paper and pen.
Rarely have a problem with uncouth customers. So, I don't see why you shouldn't have a go at this position. Tell your boss that there have been many deaf (speaking or non-speaking) people that have had worked at this position and did fine.

I am Profoundly deaf and had worked as temp every xmas (i don't work for them in any part of the year just xmas) for Marks and Spencer in UK. I do everything as per hearing does that includes tills, customer services. "The managers loves me because I'm an efficient worker and don't ask many questions" (miss delectable) had summed this up perfectly of me. The managers put me on the tills the most of evenings as i do the job faster than anyone! Also they always send me an email begging me to come back for xmas (i start in oct and finishes in jan)!! with this i also work at school and goes to college!!
If you are confident enough, knows how to use tills well and i don't see the problem. half the time i don't speak to the customer other than polite hello, how are you etc, or I don't promote things (the managers and i agreed not to do this since it's a bit complicated for me to explain) And being on the tills is damn noisy and it's hard to hear the customers even for the hearing people anyway! Good luck. |

Vocational Rehab had gotten me a job with Sams Club as a cashier when I got my 2 HAs. After completeing all requirements with VR, Sams Club moved me to a stock position as they didn't want a hoh person on the registers.
I informed VR about the situation and they then got me my job with a counseling center that I loved. I worked in administration and entered billing into the State of Missouri Department of Mental Health website. No phone work at all.
