I've been discriminated due to disability too often. Although I'm a bi female I get discriminated far more for my disability then for my sexual orientation or my gender.

People focus too much about discrimination against gender and race.

It's about people considered other forms of discrimination too. Paricularly ageism, Ableism and specism.

I have often wondered if some jobs I interviewed for in the past I would have gotten if I were not deaf. But I have no way of knowing that for sure, and never pursued the issue with those prospective employers. Who wants to work with an employer who won't give me a chance -- if the decision to not hire me was based on my deafness? So that's why I don't pursue it. I don't think I've ever felt discriminated against anywhere else, though. Maybe pitied, but that's an entirely different story.

Same here.

I have made it through several interviews. Some I have not made it through.

I have never really looked back and and thought if they were being discriminating towards my hearing loss. I have had so many other openings that I really did not care to. So I really can not say if I was discriminated against or not.

Was it because of your lifestyle or because of your deafness?

Deafness.

They wouldn't provide for an interpreter for staff meetings after requesting it several times.

I filed a complaint with EEOC and then my employer fired me for doing that.

I sued.

I won.

I'm sure they have learned their lesson. Not only they had to pay compensation stemming from the lawsuit but they are also on watch by EEOC meaning that EEOC will periodically check in on them to make sure that they are adhereing to the federal laws.

Thanks.

It was 3 1/2 year legal battle and I did all the legal work myself as well as represented myself.

When it was getting down to the final wire before court date--they wanted to settle.

I was figuring approxiamately $ 30,000 in damages but they offered $ 45,000 to settle.

I took it!

As that adage goes, "There is a sucker born every minute." In this case--it was them!

3.5 years is a short time, compared to other suits similar to that.

If you would not have agreed to settle, It would have lasted a lot longer than that.
