I work for a major retail chain and three days a week I work in an office. I have a CI, but it has only been activated since December. I am still "learning to hear" and have not tried to use a phone. I may never be able to use a land line phone and due to that, I put in an ADA request for a Captel phone as the office deals with just as many "in store" calls as out of store calls. Captel would allow me to use the intercom style calls as well as out of store calls. I put in my request at the first of the month, Sept. 2008, and still have had no reply. What should I do? Contact a lawyer? Threaten to do so? Any help????

Make a second request in writing, and specify a date by which you expect the accommodation to be provided. Also, state the date of your first request and the fact that it has not been responded to in a reasonable amount of time. Send a copy of the letter to your lawyer, and make sure to note on the bottom of the request to your employer: CC: attorney. Keep copies of everything for documentation.

If you can not afford an attorney send it VIA certified mail. Signed and receipt.

Keep records.

Document, Date and keep records of your request.

Agreed. But if you aren't going to CC an attorney, put a statement in the request that will be your next step if the accommodation hasn't been provided by the stated date.

What in the heck is a CC attorney?

If you don't have an attorney--you may want to be in touch with your local, state Human Rights commission or the Feds--EEOC.

you mean you want your company to pay for a Captel phone? Talk to the HQ HR office or the HQ EEO office. your local office workplace won't know.
