Nope. I think that Canada doesn't have strict laws like we have ADA. I could be wrong... just stating what I've read, heard, and seen.

Maybe I should sing, "Oh Susanna"?

Quote:
Oh, Susanna

I come from Alabama with my Banjo on my knee
I'm going to Louisiana, my true love for to see
It rained all night the day I left
The weather it was dry
The sun so hot, I froze to death
Susanna, don't you cry

Oh, Susanna,
Oh don't you cry for me
For I come from Alabama
With my Banjo on my knee

I had a dream the other night when everything was still
I thought I saw Susanna a-coming down the hill
The buckwheat cake was in her mouth
The tear was in her eye
Says I, I'm coming from the south
Susanna, don't you cry

In general, colleges and universities in Ontario are required to provide interpreters and notetakers if requested. What kind of trouble are you having with the teacher?

Our "notetakers" are students who have to volunteer to do the note taking and they only do it because they get a 25 gift cert. towards the book store for each course they do. I keep telling my teacher how to wear the fm system (its not hard) and she puts it too low forgets she has it on leans forward against the podium and rubs her books and hands on it so all i get is feedback. And she's had it in for me since day 1 when i interrupted her and told her i needed to read her lips and i couldnt cuz she kept flailing her arms to and fro and i couldn't see her talking. Andd to make matters worse..i went up to her after a class to discuss the oral quiz we had and i was sooo confused during it ...it was like jeopardy except no buzzers just who ever yelled it first. So, i was like are we going to do these alot cuz im hoh and i have a hard time following...she was lke" WELL why dont YOU sit in the FRONT!" ...and i told her that wouldn't make much of a diff since ppl are yelling out answers and it wouldnt matter where the sound was coming from esp if the sounds are behind me thats even worse..and i guess she was still talking but i didnt hear her so i walked away and this girl in my class was like calm down (the teacher was turning red and said i was rude) she is hoh and wears ha's, she's not trying to be rude! and ever sicne then shes hated me more..

If you don't use ASL or some manual coded sign language (SEE, PSE, etc), I would suggest a CART (communication access realtime translation). See what you can get done about that. Sometimes, it's better this way without having to constantly remind the teacher.

In case you have not been able to resolve your situation......

How about oral interpreters?

I have just finished college in the United States. I used oral (lip reading) interpreters throughout my college career and it was great! Maybe there could be some sign interpreters that could try out oral interpreting, if that's even possible in Canada? That way you will always have the interpreter facing you no matter where the instructor will be......and also the interpreter will be able to tell you what the students say.......

I think this is a better way, if the interpreter doesn't understand the instructor, then you can ask for clarification....

Good Luck!!

Canada does not have any law like the ADA; however, the Charter of Rights and past Supreme Court of Canada rulings have defined and strengthened our rights to have access to have ASL/LSQ/oral interpreters, notetakers and any means of communications that you need most.

I am suggesting you to contact Jim Roots, Executive Director of the Canadian Association of the Deaf and he will be happy to help you. Right now, he is in Calgary for the Deaf Canada Conference and he should return early next week.

Which university/college in Ottawa are you attending? University of Ottawa? Carleton University? Algonquin College? I am sure they have office that specializing in assisting disabled students and perhaps you can set up a meeting with the services coordinator and the professor in order to find a solution. I am sorry that you have gone into your situation; however, hopefully the solution will be found soon. I believe in a win-win situation.

You should be able to have professional notetakers at Carleton University which is not far from my home and work.

I will check with my friend who recently graduated there. I will PM you when I get her answer.
