Wal-Mart

I put this in with the other thread, but it was old. wasn't sure if it was going to be read so I re-posted it.. sorry

I just put in an appication in on Feb 29th, and waited a week. and than Called everyday to talk to two asst. manager for 3rd trik, finally they've talked to each other and one said to get me in the door if I'm ok, so I've called another time and they said they had to look @ the computer and he'll call me back, Finally someone called me back and asked how I filled ou the 60 Strongly Agree or disagree questions, and I told him honestly, I did my best but I was strugglin with it cause the questions were mixed up to confused you and that I also have a Learning Disabilties. My friend works there and has been talkin to them as well.. he told her that I should be here soon, after some process of saying that he could over-ride the questionair thru the TOP human resource person since of my "LD" status. and he would call me back in a week. week comes by and no phone call. so I called back and talked to the other manager and he said well let me check my e-mails and i'll call you back. So he finally called me back and was like no i'm not in their computer system still and that I probably don't have a chance cause they have to hire 150 ppl thats in front of me since I've failed the survey. I told him what the other manager said about over-riding the test and he was like I never heard of that one before..

What the heck is goin on? Is this considering a discrimnation since I told them I had a "LD" after the fact they told me that i would have the job and now they say well we have 150 ppl in fron of you so come back with your 90 day thing retires so u can re do ur applilcation or so.

I'm 19 male, hard of hearing w/ two hearing aids. I just feel i'm not worthless anymore I cant find a job...

Did you go up the ladder or ask to speak with the HR?

Andy,

Did you go into the store everyday and inquire with the hiring manager? Beats a phone call and still, if you want to work there, keep pestering them.

I think those questionnaires are real lame. Most people will lie to that. I mean, come on, how many times do you see perfect customer service? LOL. I always passed it the first few times, and the last time I failed it for some reason. It's a clearly lame thing. I failed it at another store, and the person I called said that I wasn't the selected one. Whatever! They are real lame questions and a waste of my time. LOL, at my grocery store, do I see oh so smily and helpful people??? No, they are their own personality regardless of the questionnaires.

Move on, there are other stores. I had wondered to send complaints regarding those silly companies supplying those questionnaires. I prefer that they interview me than do those silly everyone-will-lie questions. Pffft!

There's a trick to those kind of surveys. Here is how you should fill them out.

You should only answer in three ways.

Strongly Agree
Strongly Disagree
Neutral (this one may not be used at all)

You're still answering honestly, but instead of saying "mostly" agree you just go up one and say "strongly agree" If you agree at all you STRONGLY agree.

I hope you get the job, people say bad things about wal-mart but if you work in the retail industry wal-mart is a good place to work. I've worked at wal-mart for the past year, so I can give you some advice if they hire you.

Keep talking to wal-mart, turnover is high, especially if you're in an area with a lot of college students, When the students leave for the summer some positions will open up.

In order to ensure that the reader answers the question with something valid instead of "neutral", they usually have 4 choices... strongly agree, agree, disagree, strongly disagree.

If they had neutral, then it's likely that a person will just breeze through the test by saying "neutral" all the way and the company would never get good reliable results.

However, you're right on the first two answers... since that's what increases your score. They would rather hear you say that you strongly agree that you like to work hard instead of just saying "agree" as if you don't really care.

You don't fail a survey test. It's a skill test, maybe your skills are inferior compared to them (Wal-Mart), but you did warn them of your disability, best chance you have is go in person and talk to Human Resource Director.

Although I have my battles with the company, I have worked for wal-mart for 18 years and the best advice is to come in person to the store. Meet as many members of management as you can and put your best foot forward. Once upon a time I was HR for our store and I know that the company is not perfect, since that doesn't exist. Each store is unique. Sometimes the problem is that local management and their own narrow views.
Our store hires "the handicapped" Wow..that includes a lot of people, doesn't it? For those of you that could be offended if I am not politically correct, I apologize in advance for this list.
We have:
Two associates that are "mentally challenged" (One is a cart pusher while the other one started in that position but has also worked maintenance and is now in the dairy department.)
One associate in a wheel chair that cannot speak and uses her special laptop to greet customers as they enter the store. (Her sister is her constant companion.)
We have at least 4 hoh associates (myself included)
In the past we have had:
Associates that are totally deaf (one worked on the sales floor while the other was a cashier..both went on to college).
Associates with down's syndrome.
Associates using canes, one with an artificial leg.
An associate with a speech problem following a stroke.
Several Associates with emotional problems (they each had their own coaches to work beside them).
So, it can be done. You just have to present yourself in the best light and let them know you are willing to do the job required of you.

Any employer wants the best they can hire. Going up against 150 people is daunting but if you have what they are lookin for, they will hire you. Get in there with confidence and if they reject you, then their loss. Get the answers they want to hear on that survey.

Once, I had to fill out that survey. I deliberately used answers not to get hired. Don't ask me why I had to do that.....but it absolutely guaranteed no calls from Wal-Mart to my number. No surprise there.

Sorry to say...but it is NOT discrimination. You took the test just like evryone else and failed. When they reviewed the scores, they did not make their choice bc of an LD or bc you are Deaf...they went by the scores. I would recommend go and talk to the person who said you could override the test/survey. If you dont have the name, next time you know to write down the name next time someone will help you. Before you take your next computer application, I would contact your local Deaf Services agency/VR counselor/job coach. Many times they will accompany you to assist in your understanding of the questions. Make sure you read through each question, and not just breeze through. I used to work with many clients doing this, so it is possible to find help.

I've had questioniares at many store. It was one of the newest thing to me. Not only at Walmart, many hardware stores, Electronic store (best buy, Circuit City) and several places that have questioniares on pc. I answered in between "agree, neutral, disagree" but few "Strongly Agree, Strongly Disagree". I never got called from supervisors.

Thanks Farmerjoe for suggestion!!

I would try that and do "white lie" on questionnaire. I always knew that questionnaire doesn't tell them who exactly you are, Face to face interview works the best. IMHO, they should throw that out cuz it's wasting time and miss the best opportunity to hire efficient potential employees.

I'm kinda old fashioned and like to fill out paper application and wait for boss to call me and have an interview. I can be pesky to them but eventually they'll hire me (I come in workplace and asked if they have tried to call me or not and sometime I meet up with supervisor with smile and ask them if they still have me in consideration for interview). I hope today world, they don't call cop on me for harrassment!!

What I always did before closing interview, I asked them when I will start!?? I intimidated interviewer and he/she said Ok, I will get back with you. I told them, OK, I would like to know soon as possible (acted a little stern). They said Ok I have someone else in our consideration but I will get back with you then. In a week or less, I got hired.

I do that ever time. It may sound pushy to them but I let them know I want job now!! It works MOST of time on many previous jobs I've applied.. (After I was hired, few months later, I learned the truth from my employers that when they told me about someone else they had in their consideration for hiring, They admitted that the applicant was not serious about job, that he decide that I would be the best candidate because I was serious enough for this job. They were so thankful to hire me cuz I'm a hard workers)

Right now, I works for Government for many year and I dunno if my 'system' would work in interview process today if I retired from GOVT and apply for part time jobs

Athleticandy88,

I hope you will get job at WM after getting in touch with HR dept. They should be respectful to you due to your LD. I don't think it's a discrimination but to me that questionnaire are kinda discrimination (in appearance) cuz it doesn't tell who exactly you are and employers are missing opportunity to hire efficient employee like you.

I once worked for a company in Kentucky and when I moved back to AR I applied for the same company. I didn't get hired b/c of that stupid questionier..even though I worked in KY..KY didn't have that stupid test. I agree with other people..White lies help. B/c one question will say I do my duties as quickly as possible. I do my job quickly but I do it right. It's tricky cause if you answer agree then you obvouisly don't do it right but if you answer disagree then you run up the clock..I hate those things. Good luck.

That doesn't make sense if one worked for the same company and then moved. Did you tranfer stores or had to quit the one store and reapply at the other store?
